Internet Speed

Hi All,

I keep going to Speedtest.net and my speed fluctuates between 1.2 Mbps and 16 Mbps. Is this normal? Is my modem to blame? I had been steady 2-3 Mbps until I started turning McAfee off. With McAfee off it skyrocketed to 15ish. Obviously I cannot go without Firewall, and malware/spyware protection so I turned it back on and I am getting the wild fluctuations. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I haven't used a speed test in years, it causes people to make posts like this... As long as my Internet is fast to use then I don't worry about what tests show. But yeah, they vary alot depending on the day or time. You could repeat It 5 times in a row and get 5 different results. I have the highest speed fios available and even at that speed there's still those days where shit lags. It's just beyond my control! Good luck though :)

Thanks Sup,

Well, at 1.2 Mbps, you notice how GD slow it is. Sometimes while I am sitting here waiting 2 minutes for a page to open, I make sounds like "bzzzzz, ding, weaw weah, nrnrnrnrnrnrnrrrrr, kweoeoeokeoeoew, like 56k used to do.

Now, I am getting redirected. Looks like it is time to just reformat the hardrive. GD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, though.

It really depends. You have to try multiple different locations that the speed test has available and if you are getting the same numbers then yes it is your internet. If your internet is slow, always try resetting your modem first by unplugging it for 30 seconds.

A lot of internet providers (especially DSL) have clauses in their agreements that say you more than likely won't get the speed that you pay for.

It's off topic but get better AV software then McAfee, it's pure shit. Avast! offers free antivirus (it says free for a year but they let you renew.)

If you are getting upto 16 mbit per second then you are probably using cable internet. If so then those kinds of fluctuations are quite normal.

With cable you are sharing bandwidth with other subscribers.

With DSL you are not sharing bandwidth with other customers so wild fluctuations are not common.

If having a stable, predicable internet connection is your main concern then you should not use cable internet.

Edit: This should be obvious but remember that the server you are connecting to can often be the limiting factor for those with high speed internet.

Sometimes with poor physical line quality if the ISP has your speed clocked too high it can cause intermittent line drops and speed problems. Usually if you call them they'll sort it out by lowering the speed to give an overall higher line quality and consistency.

Forgetfulpenguin... I have a 100mb cable connection that is uncontested for a consistent 100mb connection,if I used a 56mb wireless card/the servers I'm connecting to are my only possible limiting factors... Fiber optic cable ftw ;)

Such baked nerd talk, lol.

Up until last month, I would have killed for 1MBps. Since I switched to Mac, 5 years ago, I haven't needed any anti virus/spyware/malware software.

It's not cable. Cable doesn't reach me out in the country. It is DSL and the tech was here for two hours installing all new wiring from the box to my modem. His tester showed 16.89 MBPS consistently, and after I reformatted my HD, dumping McAfee, it was great for a while. Mostly though, it is around 2-Mbps, and sometimes seems to be no bps. Torture! I forgot I started this thread and just started another asking for recommendations for AV that won't bog me down. Anyone?

You could just end up like I did. Move to a location based on high speed availability, Once I realized that 100Mb internet was available near me I moved into an apartment just because it had it.

Ive got a dish too Could be clouds effects it or the wind could have moved the dish (if the wind move it call them back & say it never worked after he pulled of the drive way so they dont try to charge you twice )
