Is there a general consensus on when the flowering period actually starts? What I mean to say is do I call my buds five weeks old from the start of light cycle change or first white pistol development. I feel like it should be from pistol growth because I believe the transition and stretch should be it's on period of development. Thoughts? Insights?

The consensus on RIU is whatever makes one look like the best.
For instance if you've been in 12/12 for around 5 weeks and you show a pic and say you have been in flower for 16 days, you will look like the best gardener ever!!!!!
100% for sure the start of 12/12 is the start of flower. It is the same thing outside, one starts getting buds when.........?

Based on your experience would you say there is a longer flowering Time than most breeders call for?

I'd say it's usually on the high end or a little longer than what they state. So if they say 6 -8 weeks figure at least eight weeks ore more. It also depends on what type of high you like. Different harvest times provide different types of highs.

Outdoor, the timeframe is irrelevant.
Most strains will start to flower in August here at this latitude (barring something highly acclimated to a different latitude, which happens). Some folks will count off the weeks til it's done, but we really just work off simpler short-or-long finish ideas. The specific time to finish is "when it's done..."

Most years my light hits 12/12 on or around September 22nd. But the start of flowering is very strain dependent. I only count weeks as it relates to seed production. I try to dust at 3 weeks to make sure the seeds finish before the flowers.

What I'm saying is different strains will START at different times outdoor, so it'll never be x weeks from a specific day based solely on photoperiod, outdoors.
The plants that get the best sun tend to flower and finish in different times than same strain, less light too. Though that doesn't appear to be a problem here, everything looks like it gets maximum sun.

They will start and finish at different times. My old sativa strains are a good couple three weeks behind some of the early stuff I've got now.

And then there is the freak shit that happens. I have an Ass Cheese f2 {Cindy's Blue Cheese X Donkey Kong} and an Ass Cheese Blues {AC X Blue Shiva X Blue Shark} that are several weeks into flower, and don't seem to care that summer just started.

There are grows where people do multi strain grows many different strains and they are all planted at the same time. Some will be chopped at different times. None of those plants were planted at different times. And in indoor, they all go into 12/12 at the same time. And they are chopped at different times.
Im not sure what you all are getting at?

I'm outdoors, where the light changes are incremental. All I'm saying is that outdoors, different strains will start flowering at different times. In most cases, the later a strain starts to flower, the longer it will take to finish.

I have no indoor experience.
 
its the same indoors, i run a perpetual, so i'm only starting one plant a week, sometimes when i flip them, one can go into flower way faster than the others, you can have plants go through their stretch and start to bud good before plants that have been in there a week or even two weeks longer, and those will usually be the ones to finish early
