I'm Confused About the Trichomes

I'm almost done with my first grow, and I had a quick question about the trichomes and when to harvest. I have read up on clear vs. cloudy vs. amber trichomes and the different kind of highs they give, but I'm a little confused, and I think my question is specific to my plant.

I am growing an autoflowering strain; they have been flowering for about 30 days. I have read that flower usually takes 40-45 days to get to peak "ripeness". However, I finally got around to buying a hand-held microscope today (60x-100x) and every single trichome looks milky to me. Is it difficult to distinguish between clear and milky?

Also, the tri's on the leaves and stuff have the bulbous top, but the tri's on the hairs don't. I read that the best way to determine harvest time is from the tri's on the hairs.

So I guess my questions are: should I wait until the regular harvest window and not worry so much about trichomes? How long does it take for milky trichomes to go from milky to amber? (I know it's probably very dependent on strain and conditions, but like a day or two, or weeks?) Will the trichomes on the hairs get mushroom-like heads too, or do they not do that?

I'm just a little worried that I may have to harvest in the next day or two. I was expecting my buds to fatten up a lot more than they have so far.

Wish I could get pics of the little guys!

You should wait for 30-50% of the trichomes to become amber. Its much easier to tell the difference from amber to milky than milky to while.

However, judging only by trichome color is a lame technique. You should first wait until 50-80% of the pistils die and shrivel and for the pods that the pistils come from swell like they bear a seed.
Only then you should look at the trichomes.
Usually I aim to chop a week after the swelling stops. Trichomes count is usually spot - on.

I always add 2 weeks to the breeder claims. Thats a nice rule of thumb but some breeder just throw numbers out of their ass without any relation to what really happening.

good luck.
