So I've decided the next logical step in my life is Australia. I'm young, educated, and want to see something other than the states. I applied for a visa and luckily enough due to my degree and field work have been accepted as a prosthetic engineer. Now I've been saving a bit here and there but now that its a go ahead I'm dumping money into my Australia account like its just mere pieces of paper. I have herd it's quite expensive to live over there, herd beer was expensive in particular. I'm also thinking of getting my masters while I'm there at one of the many universities that would specialize in materials bioengineering (found 6 programs).

Question time:

Has anyone moved from USA to auss and how was the transition, or anywhere else for that matter!

where would you prefer to live as a 24 year old male with an engineering degree.

is everything that expensive?

how is the economy over there I hear its pretty stable and isn't affected by the worlds economy as much as other places.

Last but not least how far will a Boston accent get me with the Sheila's :hump:

any and all insight would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

No Lived here all my life in Sydney, but have family in the states

where would you prefer to live as a 24 year old male with an engineering degree.

Melbourne, medical sector is big down there

is everything that expensive?

Some things are just taxed higher, booze, smokes... Price of living is high, but with your degree so would your remuneration

how is the economy over there I hear its pretty stable and isn't affected by the worlds economy as much as other places.

Not too bad, compared to other countries, excellent, but we just posted a $20b deficit so let's see how things go, the dollar may drop in the future so the transition may be cheaper for you

Last but not least how far will a Boston accent get me with the Sheila's :hump:

Melbournes probably the most multicultural city, if you're from boston you'll love Melbourne re: climate, people, geography etc... So you'll probably find some US sheilas over here. The best looking chicks in this country live in perth tho, really good ratio of gorgeous chicks to ugly chicks - like 5:1

any and all insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey buddy! Dude from the US here, living in Melbourne! been here for a while, over a year in all now. I'm from the west coast but from what I've noticed and experienced, any American accent will get you far with the right lady ;)

I'd say melbourne for the place to live, lot of business here, lot of people, lot of things you can do. (something going on every night of the week in the city) Lot of different culture like the dude above said.

There is a lot that is more expensive, but you will find some things are cheaper.

If you like name brand clothes, even the ones you'd take for granted in the states, BUY THEM OVER THERE!!! You'll find some random pants/shirts from like addidas or something liek that for hundreds not just 20 bucks .

I'd like to help more right now but I have a massive hangover, so I'll get back to this thread and andswer some more questions when I can think straight.

This country is great, enjoy it bud you will love it! I know i do!

I've herd nothing but good things and thanks for the answers to my questions I was really thinking Brisbane for some reason I dono why my heart was set on it, I have found a lot of engineering goes on over there.. I may also pursue my masters while over there anyone have any insight on the education in the universities I'm sure it's just as good as in the states. I have figured Melbourne was just to commercial for me but being from the city maybe it would be an easy transition?

I also her kangaroo meat is mighty tasty can anyone attest to this?

And I play a didgeridoo it's actually my only instrument can women really not play it in auss?

where is Perth ? Hahah

Melb is very big citylike , but you can also go to near suburbs and get the great outdoors too. Love the city though, fun night life and all! Great public transport system, can tram/train anywhere that's near, and some that's far!

There are a LOT of students here, many from other countries so I'd assume the education here is great. From what I hear it's just getting better as well but don't quote me on that.

Perth is in western aus, big working city I believe.

Transition should be easy if you go near a big city, melbourne is an easy place to find your footing! I hear brisbane is nice as well!

Kangaroo meat is great, so is crocodile, i love the crocodile!

But the best is hands down the nice coke bottle figured women meat ;)

Nice yeah I'm on board with the coke bottle meat hahha I got a very serious relationship going on now but she isn't ready to move so peace to ya crease

i had herd the education was great over there and glad to hear the students are diverse that's a good sign as well.

Brisbane has been a topic of a lot of my research it just seems that the industry there is inline with what I'm looking for materials engineering what is the closest university to the city? Hopefully they have a graduate program that would work for me, I hear its a good looking city not right on the water but within driving distance is this correct?

also I'm trying to be frugal on transportation but know public wouldn't work exclusively for me , my plan is to get a ktm on/off road bike is this common in oz? Any insight on pricing of such an item I mean I could pick up a 250 over here (Boston) for around 2 k

Thanks in advance guys

wont get much here for 2k, would get a 10+ year old bike probably. a decent ktm 250 will be more like $4-6k. but ktm are pricey here. I dunno if its like that world wide but even the stock clutch levers are usually double the price of other bikes
