I need a SILENT fan. Can someone help please :)

Hi everyone,

So ive got a problem. 2 fans and $450 later Im still not happy with the fan I have.

So far I started out with a 6inch Silenced Hyperfan. I was not happy with the high pitch occilating whine sound like a jet engine.

So I threw it in the bin and got an 8inch Silenced Hyperfan, in hope to run it a lowest speed and not have any sound. Instead it also has a Whine noise, particulary at lower speeds.

I grow with a 315w CMH in a 4x2x6 wardrobe. I have acoustic ducting and a carbon filter, so the Air Movement sound is not an issue.

The other problem is that the 8inch Hyper fan with the silencer is about 22inchs long and 10inch round! I have had to construct a giant box that sits on top of the drobe, but its just ridiculous and overkill for such a small space.

I keep getting mixed reports on weather or not Mixed Flow fans make more or less noise than Centifugal fans. Also the fact that Hyperfan is chinese made, maybe be the issue.

I have heard this whine/whistle jet engine noise on every hyperfan I have come across, but thwen have been in other people grow rooms over the years and some of them have silent fans.. I have no idea what they were, but i know this does exist!

I have come across the Blaubergs at a good price... Either the Turbo G or Centro G... Can anyone tell me if these things are silent operators?

I really need something small, 6inch is maximum, would prefer 4 inch! but this will make a lot of noise compared to a 6inch i understand... What if I get a 4 or 5inch and sound insulate the shit out of it and run at ful speed?

Im really out of options and its pissed the hell out of me for the past 2 years! Need this problem solved..

Another thing is that I cannot see any fans in person. I am disabled and do not leave the house much, I am also pretty far away from major shops.

No fans are silent, my friend. Every one of them will make noise...whirring...whooshing...vibrating....humming....

You're likely faced with building a box or shielding the fan housing in some fashion. It's hard to give advice cus we can't see what you have going on/etc.

I saw an art installation where they had a speed metal band performing inside a box lined with acoustic foam (among other tech), and it was dead silent outside with the door closed. I agree some rigging on your part will be the best solution...My fan is in a box lined with insulation and styrofoam, cuts about 70-80% of the noise.

If in a box, with a fan on perimeter of box, sometimes even if not necessary, just for the sound dampening effect ducting may help from both ends running pieces in and out of there. Just idea. I'm not 100% in your situation, your fans, your location, your space etc will work not work ya know. This works with bigger fans/ducting.

I have seen this as well. Open door and it's rock band playing MAX volume in your face. close door and not a sound. Was impressive!

If after trying everything you can't get the noise low enough then put something on top of your cab that normally makes fan noises. Such as a mini tower computer from the junkyard. Nobody will question it, they'll just think you have a huge collection of pr0n.

bloody fans! well thanks for the input. wont fork out anymore money for another fan. will build another silencer for the silenced fan lol picked up some mdf, making a box and carpeting the inside. gonna be a big heavy box to sit on top of the cabinet and will have to disguse it as a chest of some sort. Just cant justify paying more for a fan when I have something that is decent. I think its the size of the silencer that is overwhelming before the noise. its a hard thing to hide.

Maybe build a nice box and then put it in a cardboard box marked "X-mas stuff" lol

Try a dyson blade less fan lol. Mufflers, more insulation, thick rubber between the fan and whatever it's mounted to. Leave a radio playing at all times. Get a noisy pet perhaps a parrot, teach it to say mind your business to company. I hope one of these suggestions will help you decide

Canfan are supposed to be good. Never tried them. But, I'm definitely in the market for something quieter and more efficient at moving air than the shitty duct fan I've got.

But for a 315w light
The 4” Nutone fan from home depo is the quietest I’ve ever owned, it’s not enough for a 1000w but the CMH & LEDs that’s your fan. I use one in my drying tent , no muffler or sound box, its quiet .
It doesn’t move as much air as the loud ones but if you need quiet , always trade offs, even 2 of these would be quieter then any of my other 4” fans .

Aquariums are also a good way to deflect suspicion in regards to fan noise, pump noise etc... also a good excuse for having pH meters and bottles of chemicals laying around..

I know this is older but if your fans humming loudly its usually because of the fan speed controller. The cheaper ones suck. A variac variable transformer will prevent this.

Isn’t that a duct booster fan? Like no resistance and it moves air, but no filters or anything or it just doesn’t move any air?

It can be used as a booster fan or stand alone. They are not cheap but if you need to move air in a smaller setup with being quite, it’s my go too.

I use in my dry tent, and it sucks enough air I don’t need a 2nd fan blowing air around .

Look for Silent -TD fans. they are like 18 - 20db, you won't be able to hear them. They are a bit weaker than noisy fans, but not by much.

In vehicles, most manufacturers make radiator cooling fans with one blade a different size to the rest, or they leave a blade out altogether. This disrupts the pattern of air flow and removes a lot of the whirring noise. NB: Car fans have many blades, so losing one isn't a big problem and can be balanced well in design.

On a small AC fan this has the potential to wreck the bearings/motor which could potentially lead to a terrible outcome, at worst; fire. However, when I replace my fan (which no longer oscillates), I will experiment with a DB meter and a drill, and put some holes in a blade to see if it is enough to disrupt the flow. I'll be chucking it out anyway and I like to experiment. I'll report my findings.

Not sure where ur at on this but a tjernlund m6 with an active air controller and insulated 4" in and out.

No sound 50 and below. Full speed is loud af lol.
