Please tell me the roots don't usually grow up the stalk and this is part of the stalk development. I don't think I have much room for soil on top of this.

Wierd....looks like leaf stems to me, but surely you would know if that were the case. If they are roots they will just fade away and shouldn't cause any real harm.

It almost looks like new growth, but I'm not sure it is. It's not roots though, they typically shy from direct sunlight and would burn up in the sun.
