I have a huge problem!?!?!

OkI had a bunch of plants growing outside nicely, then I saw some people near them so i quickly pulled them out panicking. The roots ripped a little so i put them in water to grow them back. For some reason the leaves are dying and arent as dark green as they should be. The plants now look like long stalks with leaves toward the tops of the plants. They have a few roots so I put them in rooting hormones and put them in the soil. Theyre just very lanky looking and I dont even know if they're goign to survive, what should I do?
