Out of the blue my computer (windows 7) is giving me an "open file - security warning" every time I open a folder. It says "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?

Name: Z:\folder.exe
Publisher: Unknown publisher
Type: Application
From: Z:\folder.exe"

Wtf? it's not a god damn application it's a folder! I can't fix this and it's extremely annoying.

Have you tried deleting everything in the folder and then deleting the folder or is the folder already empty?

...my grannie smith told me something a long time ago :) Apple pie is awesome once out of the window.

No. It is a shared folder on another computer and is about 40GB.

Folder.exe sure looks like an executable to me. You got any anti virus program installed?

It doesn't have exe on the end, and it's not an exe file. That is the problem, windows thinks it's an exe but it's just a folder.

It is doing it to all the subfolders too. The folders are fine, and the shared drive is fine. In fact my computer will open the folder when I tell it to run the untrusted publisher. There are no viruses

...is your box setup to view hidden files and all extensions?

I am going to go the AV route now anyway. Perhaps a coworker fucked something up before. I checked other stations and they are doing the same thing.

Viruses don't just show up without the user doing something wrong. I haven't done anything today that could potentially let a virus in. I haven't run any programs or opened anything suspicious, or gone to any suspicious websites. I have been on toke n talk, and I have been doing my work and opening excel and word documents. All documents I have opened have been from 100% trusted places.

I downloaded and installed AVG, and when it prompted me to restart my pc wouldn't boot up. I am on in safe mode scanning now.

No viruses. I think it was a comparability issue with AVG. I restored the pc back to 1-27-12 recovery point. Still get that damn message trying to open folders. When I click run it opens the folders so I can still access everything, but it's still a pain in my ass and not working the way it is supposed to and I have no idea how to fix it.

if its a network drive delete it and try to remap it, or rename folder and subfolders removing the .exe off the end.

Yes I know that, which is why it is so strange.

It turns out it was a worm. It came from an mp3 player I plugged into my computer. Apparently the autorun file was infected, and instantly infected my computer once it was plugged in. How it spread from there to the server, and then to other computers, is beyond me. The computers was on, but no one was here so nothing was being done. And the server just stores file.

AVG and malwarebytes do not identify this worm, even with the recent definitions (which is stupid because this mp3 player is a spare and has been out of commission for almost a year, so the virus has to be at least that old).

I was going to load the mp3 player up because I lost mine and was leaving for a long trip. So long story short someone else had to come in and fix the problem while I was gone. Most of the pcs are clean. The company my boss called still has a couple computers, they are supposed to come back and finish later today.

Aww bummer. Is all the info on the servers gonna be lost? I mean, to fix it, do they have to take everything off to make sure the worm is gone? Or can they just get rid of the worm?

Lol, brings me back to the days when I used to hate computers. Now that I don't use Windows anymore would you believe I actually like computers a lot. It amazes me everybody still puts themselves through all of this just so they can get less out of their system.

I switched from AVG to running Avast and ESET/NOD. So far, nothing gets past them. AVG, while once the shit, has gone downhill. I run Linux on the desktop, ang I reinstalled Win7 on the laptop because Blackberry software doesnt run on Linux. I love Linux, Microsoft is the devil.
