i got the 400w hps from htg supply and i want to change the reflector because of heating problems. but the question is.. is it possible to change it to a cooltube? and what inline fan should i get to cool the cooltube? i got a 4 inch already with my carbon filter but i dont think that will be enough to cool the cooltube too should i get a 6 inch fan and filter? and use the 4 inch for the cooltube? or just get another 4 inch fan?

hps i got-

I like HTG Supply, anyway sure its posible to change it to a cool tube. If you have the model I think, the socket is hard wired to the ballast. Just remove the socket from the reflector and use it as the socket on the cooltube. I would just stick with 4'inch fan if that is what size flange your tube and filter are. You will need an inline fan with speed control, I would check out hydrofarm or Vortex, because you want something that will last. I keep my fan running through my carbon filter 24/7, although I have it set to run at a lower speed when the lights are off.
Hope this helps.

it is hard wired to the ballast, i might get a 6 inch fan and filter kit, so i get better air flow and use my current 4 inch for the cooltube. could i put on 6 inch to 4 inch reducers to be able to use my 4 incher on it? and would it be enough cfm? is like 190 cfm

Yea, you could do that with the reducder no-prob. You must be talking about a duct fan, not an inline fan. Because an inline 6' fan would be about 400 cfm.

im talking about my 4 inch inline fan being 200 cfm. is that enough and would i have to attach ducting to both ends? or could i just put ducting on one end and vent it through the floor outside

I think I see what you are saying, (using your 4' inlne fan for a 6' filter? No, I would use the same size fan the filter is matched for. If you are just talking about cooling the tube only, then I would say the 4' inch fan would be fine.

im saying, buy a new 6 inch fan and filter with a speed controller because i dont got one now, use that as my odor control if you wanna call it.e the 4 inch that i got now, for the cooltube only, and venting the hot air from the tube outside instead of back into the room where the ac is on.
i got 2 4 1/2 inch passive intakes

If you pull air through a cooltube without a carbon filter you will be exhausting smelly air. Run a 6" filter to cooltube to fan to outside.

6 inch would be enough? should i get a speed controller or would the 6 inch have to be full throttle all the time? and i never even though about the smelly air. thanks for reminding me +rep.

6" should be fine and avoid a htg carbon filter (growbright) the one I had sucked I ended up getting a can. Make sure your fans cfm is not more than the filter can handle or the filter wont have a chance to scrub the air before its exhausted. Speed control is a nice thing to have but not needed tkough I use one.

yeah but could i lower the speed of the fan and it still scrub the air good? my cab is 33 wide 63 long 20 deep. thats in inches.

and could you give me some good brands? i was gonna get that one you mentioned from ebay but i just now noticed it was growbright. im looking for a fan and filter kit.

I use the growbright fan, good but kinda loud with a Can filter and I have a new Phresh filter when
the can craps out.
Speed controls nice because you can turn it down as need like when the lights are out.

yeah i dont care how loud the fan is as long as it does the job. does it work good though? would you recommend another one?

i was looking at prices of 6 inch fans and filters and i dont really got the money right now for both the cooltube and the fan and filter, could i just buy the cooltube and hook my 4 inch fan to the filter and cooltube using reducers? like this

carbon filter>4 to 6 inch reducer>cooltube>inline fan>venting through the floor outside

i will have 2 90 degree turns.. is it still able to be done? my fan is 190 cfm and feels like it blows alot of air.

Try the 4" it might be enough the 90 degree bends will reduce flow though.
