HPS vs LED w/ 3 different strains.

5:20 am i started germ(paper towel method)
the 3 strains i am beginning are
3 Laughing Buddha
3 Red Dragon - Both from Barney's Farm
3 Chocolate Haze - Royal Queen Seeds.
as soon as seeds pop they will be transfer into either solo cups or final home (3 gallon smart pots). i have not decided, yet...

5 plants will be under 4 hps lights that totals 600watts(150w each)
4 Plants will be under RapidLED.com's 2x4 5 Cree CXB3590 3000k cob leds that totals 315watts. (Recommended by many genetics/growers.. massmedical, royalqueen, etc.)
they will start and finish under their specific lights and will be kept separate.
no CLF or supplemental lights..
I will be using Fox Farm Ocean Floor And the Fox Farm line of nutes.
(i really like fox farm)
according to what i have read i should get 1g - 1.5g per watt from the LEDs
according to my other grows I've gotten a little bit more than .5g per watt with HPS.
Total Weight Goal - around 615g. 315 - LED 300 - HPS
Maximum height i want is 24"
Goal height is between 15" - 20"...
I have never grown under LEDs before.

Oh i know. but they have probably been doing it awhile. same with the people who get +1g with the HPS or CMH... I am no where near that good, yet!

anywho, all seeds popped and have been planted into their final home.
i always feel like i fuck up this part for multiple reasons... so the next few days ill be a little worried.
also.. "sigh":wall::wall: im pretty sure i messed up the order, i didn't have them in separate containers and only the lid was labeled.
I took the lid off when i started filling up the pots.. by the time i was done, 2 hours later i forgot. which way the lid was on... so..
i know which is the chocolate haze for sure... but i'm not sure about the red dragon or the laughing buddha, hurray for surprises!

i can tell already that the LED is much brighter than the HPS.
and yeah!! have you seen those crazy pictures of the "white tips" LED can produce? just nothing but stacks of trichomes on the tips of top buds.
people argue about it being bleached... but i have had bleached plants from zinc def and lights/light burn... it did not look anything to get excited about like those "white tips" do...

Yeah should produce more trichs and more terps for sure! Once I built my own lights, I couldn't believe the quality hike.. hard to go back once you've experienced it!

i still yet to see a led out perform a hps keep me posted

8 of 9 have popped through soil... ill give it 2 more days before i forget about the last one...

they are all pretty much the exact same size... and look exactly the same right now. 1.5 - 2 inches tall, if that.
i check for stretching multiple times a day... mostly because ive never used LED's before so im not sure how bright to have it yet...
plants look happy and it is currently about half way... the color difference between 2700k and 3000k i feel like is quite a lot.

Sorry to burst your bubble but if you're going to do a side by side, the first thing you need to do is get clones, under both lights. Growing from seed all you'll see is that both lights grow weed, likely better quality/terps under the LED's, but no weight comparisons can be done if you're growing from seed. There's too much variation growing from seed, growth patterns, bud density, almost any metric you can think of is a variable when growing from seed vs. clones. I just pulled 6x plants of the same strain from seed, 3 that looked almost identical, but the weights for those 3 varied from 85g on the low end to 109g on the high end.

it will absolutely be valid test, especially for me...
ill be comparing smells, yield and the effects.

the HPS is more RED on the spectrum so it should produce better buds, right?
but the LED is a much clearer brighter quality of light that is also easier photosynthesized...?

I have nothing to add to the argument. I see the good and bad from both sides. which is why im finding out first hand for myself.. and no.. this will not be the only "test" i do.. but i know i will get the answers i'm looking for at the end of this.

My thoughts going into this were "i have the room... so im going to try it.."

dimensions for each grow is approx 2 x 4. They are in the same room not separated by anything except by enough distance for the lights to be too weak to affect each other. Im posting pictures....

NOW about what i already see......

The plants so far are growing at an even rate and both look exactly the same...
FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW, the orange light with the dark stripes/area is the HPS, clear pictures are under the LEDS

if i had to guess, i can already tell which plants are where just from their breeders descriptions.
Red Dragon being mostly indica is showing its the shortest and second leafs the most, i believe...
Chocolate Haze is about 75/65 - i know where is one is for sure..
Laughing Buddha is something like.. 85/15 - 90/10, i don't remember, but i believe it's the "taller" of all the seedlings..
I wont know for sure until i see/smell the flowers, though.

I forgot to mention 8 of 9 popped... that's why there are only 8 pictures instead of 9.
Anyways... here's the room. Feel free to argue about it. Like I said before. This is for me and I will find out what I am aiming to. I will share my find. The rest is up to you.
I'm just your every day average grower, trying to get better and better and save me and my family as much money as possible without losing a luxury.

What nutes from the trio are you planning on giving them on their 1st feeding and in what amounts?​

How many grows in the past have you used that combo?

I'll be happy to bail if asked.
I'm asking the questions about nutes to see what your game plan is for using them the 1st couple of times of feeding in the grow.

I didn't even know I was in a journal at 1st.
I think I found this link in the new posts section and the title sounded like something from the indoor growing section lol.

It got out of hand. I apologize, i should have made the name much more specific.. among other things... thank you for taking care of this for me.

Hell. I've asked someone why a clone would be growing differently in the same environment it was cloned in, and got called
all kinds of things...

I do like their nutes. ive used them for every grow, ive grown 5 times, this one is my 6th.
The first three grows i used random cheap soil and random, very very old bag seed from crap weed.
But i used the 3 main nutes.. grow big, tiger bloom and big bloom. i liked the results so i bought more of their line and their soil when i spent money on seeds.(i have not tried other nutes but of course i'm willing to.)
last grow was mosca negra's legend ogk and cindy99 and they were spot on with what i could find about them. all plants very "uniform" with each other...
i over fed with the bloom boosters last time but it wasn't bad.
I just follow the feeding schedule for the most part but i start off light, with just big bloom and start adding more a little at a time when they get past the seedling stage.
I do my very best to read the plants and feed what they need as they need it...
I will be LSTing them without topping them. and at around 5 - 6 inches tall i will begin flowering..
That's the whole game plan! lol

Thanks for the responce.
I wanted to see where you were at with them before commenting.

I have run ffof with a large variety of nutes over the years.
I go water only for the 1st 5 weeks with ffof then top dress with earthworm castings and a balance dry organic fertilizer.


I like that you plan on feeding only big bloom at the beginning.
It is the safest feed to give. The other two need to be given with care.
Big grow can easily cause a nitrogen tox if used to soon.
Tiger bloom is best not to be used till flower and only in small amounts during the stretch. More can be used at the end of the stretch.

I'm basing this on memory of using them during a grow.
I use nothing but dry organic amendments these days.
With another 20 grows under your belt, if you continue with soil growing you will likely evolve to new ways of feeding. The fox farm trio will sit off to the side available for emergencies.
LOL I get what you mean about the occasional anger. You may here it for using bottled nutes at some point lol but it's all good.
