hi can you help i just got a new adjusta watt ballast with 250w osram bulb i have a contactor/timer and the iec plug where the relector plugs in to the ballast set on fire it worked for about three days fine then stoped so i moved it and it worked again but i just ran it a few mins then i tryed again and it set on fire at the plug? why would this happen?thanks

something isn't wired correctly. you can salvage by taking it apart and rewiring (I'll post a link), but if you bought this new, return it for another.

is it defo the ballast and not the plug iec connection?just really dont want to send it back

those things are usually tested before shipped, ive seen them melt but fires pretty weird.
i bet the current was too much or a short, i would get a new shiny one for replacing it
