HPS or the sun?!

Hey all! Been awhile, so I just harvested a plant and the buds came out very airy growing outside. I did not feed, I had a small pot for it and genetics could of been suspect. We just put two other plants into flower and I want them to beef up this time! We put into 5 gallon buckets and have been on a good feeding schedule. Using a mixture of flower fuel 1-34-32 and general hudroponics flower mixture. Every 3-4 waterings I feed. We are in west Florida panhandle area and the last plant went thru a majority of its flowering in very humid hot conditions, humidity outside in July August is 80-90% and temps upwards of 95. Was this the issue for weak buds???? They were getting 12 hours of dark for sure. The temps have came down a lot now In beginning of November 80 high 50 low and low humidity. Should I put them under the 400 watt hps or just give them that amazing beautiful sun?!?! Thanks so much!!!!

The flora trio...is well...a trio, designed to be used together, all 3, get flora Grow as well, or you are not utilizing the science involved in creating the Flora TrioGH-Flora-simple-drain-to-waste.jpg

Yeah I have all of em, it’s behind in the pic. My main question is what’s better sun or hps?! Guess it greatly depends on location and all of that. I’m getting 11 and half hours of good Florida sun on them, temps ranging from 50-80 and humidity around 50%

I heard if u use 3 HPS it's like the sun

jk. HPS is really red on the spectrum. The sun is fairly balanced. Ur question is hard to answer.. Your goal is dense buds?

Outdoor is amazing,but no control

Indoors much more control, but it's not the sun

I'd do both if I could but live in the surface of the sun

I personally like QBs over hps, but hps is much better than blurple lights

Yeah, pretty much just want fatter less airy bud. There is zero control in any of my experimental grow so it’s hard to get a baseline haha. I did have a very small pot on last grow and no nutes and no idea about genetics. I just wasn’t sure if it was because it was sun grown. I read a bunch about high humidity causing blame for air buds as well. Which we had

Genetics play a big part in bud structure

And if they don't get fed enough, well, that's pretty obvious too

The environment is probably the most important aspect in growing

Keep everything as best to perfect as possible

Easy peasy....lol

I've had a year where I've grown under all the options available to me...blurples, hps, qb, cobs and SUN. Some plants got a dose of all, some got more of one , some got the other. My best plants were those grown under qb/cobs and "controlled" environment.

Have a look in the biggest plant thread, there's plants bigger than I ever imagined possible, I can tell you 3 x 1000w hps wouldn't come close to producing the things that the sun can produce with a poly tunnel.
I'll try to find the post it's jaw dropping!

I'm reading oldreefer,s post just to be clear I'm talking about bulk I think oldreefer is referring to quality?

@Oldreefer do the different light have a dramatic effect on the flavour or a mild effect, I've got a 4k 240w led would be worth adding it to the mix or flowering with it?

Much awesomeness link!

Quite right, I was mostly referring to health of a plant. Environment made the biggest change to every aspect....
Potency? I've always found a well grown plant is the same potency as a stunted one of same strain. Very little effect IMO....Haven't done any flavor comparisons per lighting...lol...all of'em rock my old ass. I will say, the prettiest/most fragrant was a qb/cobs grown with daily sun visits. Sun just seems to make the fruit glisten. These are grown under qb/cobs but enjoying a moment outside.

Start by buying better genetics. or get a known clone so you have an idea what the outcome should look like when you grow it properly.

FLA is only surpassed for sunshine by some of the West Coast and Hawaii. You want to use the sun for sure.

Rainfall and humidity are big issues, if I could set it up how I want it, it would be with raised beds or large pots (to deal with rainfall issues) and lots of room around them for airflow because of humidity.

Okay awesome feedback here, that makes me decide to stay away from hps. I hate the heat issues that causes not to mention the extra 50 a month on power. What’s the lowest temps I should worry about????? I’m using a five gallon bucket with holes on bottom. Should I go bigger?????

I have been a HPS grower for 3 decades and recently started playing around with LED. I find that given the same cut, same feed, the LED seems to produce a denser, harder bud than the HPS. Thing is with LED you have to tune your environment for it. You need warmer canopy temps to makeup for the lack of IR. 3500K White LED is what I am talking about, not the blurples. Honestly I have grown some really dense flower under HPS but I always make sure to reduce temperatures, co2, and light intensity during the ripening phase.
