Hps Lighting Helpppp!!!

That's the price for the bulb alone, you need the ballast and ideally the reflector.

The cheapest part of a HPS setup is the bulb, followed by reflector, then ballast, here in the uk anyway.

I think you really oughtta seriously think about getting a hps setup, for worthwhile buds.
If you can't afford to buy a new setup, (advised) at least get a second hand one, about half the price normally.

Bear in mind aswell, that you won't be able to keep the light as close to your plants as you do with your CFL's, but it's the way to go.

Soupaman, I want to ask you something.

I'm also a first time grower (my journal is here: https://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/58850-my-first-attempt-help-suggestions.html )

I have a cfl setup, which of course costed way less than the hps setup. I've seen around the forum some very good grows with cfls. I mean during vegging. Why couldn't he just get a couple of cfls (275W each) which cost like 35 bucks, to use during vegging, and when the time for flowering comes, he would have saved some money and get the hps setup then. If everything is alright with the plants then.

I think what most people are talking about when they say just bite the bullett & get a HID light instead of many cfl's is this.

What is the point of buying something (cfl's) that you intend to take out of service & replace at a later date, how is this saving any money, over the course of the entire grow, spending money without any thought about the future work ability or future upgrades to your grow room is not using common business sense, this type of rushed spending makes the cost's at the end of the grow,or several grows much more expensive.

Instead of buying things that you intend on replacing with better equipment, being in a rush to just grow anything, the smarter move is to chill till the right equipment can be bought in the first place.

a 400 watt hps light is prolly like 200-300 bucks

Complete systems can be bought any day of the week for $150 shipped right to your door, thats with shipping charges included, they can be bought for $110 if you pick them up.

I totally agree with you, about spending money in things you already know you're gonna replace. But from what I read and was advised when I decided to grow, I don't have to throw away the cfl's. I can always use them for the clones. I can also continue using them during veg, and switch to hps during flower. Am I wrong?

No your 100% right,i just like to tell people to stop & think about their spending & to have a plan, alot of people buy many cheap things in order to not buy one expensive thing that works better,as long as you can still use something its not a waste.

I'm on my second grow, first grow failed.
Second grow, more successful, (see pics) I used CFL's through vegetative, as I didn't have a HPS light or the funds to get one, and just before budding I bought a 400W HPS setup.

In between veg & budding, I borrowed a mates envirolight, 200W I think, and I noticed vigarous growth.

Some people use MH (Metal Halide) for vegatative, and HPS for flowering.

It's down to preference, but I'd probably start off with CFL lighting, then later in veg I'd switch to HPS, to save a bit on the electric.

If I had my own enviro light, I'd use that from start to late veg.

It's all about what works for you pal.

I'm pretty sure if you try to plug a 400w bulb into a regular lamp socket you will either blow it up or it will hardly glow.

I agree with investing in a HID bulb+reflector+ballast setup. It pays for itself if you consider the money you save on buying weed and the high efficiency (HPS in particular) of this system. Once you have it set up, just replace the bulb once every 6 months.

Growing Passion, another option you have is to buy an enviro bulb, I used a 200W, but think they're available in higher wattages.

More within your price range, but HPS is really the way to go.

With an enviro bulb / grow lamp, no need for ballast, but you'd need ideally a reflector, or at minimum, what I believe to be an E40 light fitting.

Correct me if I'm wrong about it being an E40 fitting.

if u r looking 4 a bulb that u can screw right in a household lightsocket w/out a ballest then try this one. they work great for small closet growers
