so what happens if you run lets say a 400W high pressure sodium light without a ballast? is it even possible? does anyone have some experience with this or know about it? id assume that they would have to be in a hood of some sort because im not sure if anyone sells light fixtures that support 400+ watts.

post opinions/knowledge pls

Im not an electrician but i'm pretty sure you would need a ballast to fire up a 400 watt HPS or MH for that matter. In fact I'm pretty sure any HID lighting requires a ballast...otherwise you're looking at a possible fire with whatever rig you come up with lol. Some lights may appear to run with no ballast but this is because the ballast is built into the hood itself.

I'm not an electrician, but I know the bulb will fail without a ballast to regulate the supplied voltage... a fire could be the consequence.

ty guys...my buddy is using cfls and was thinking of rigging up a hps lol. looks like most of the $$ is in the hood/ballast though.

they look nice and healthy, but why and with what are you spraying them down with?
lastly, i'd think about switching them to 12 / 12 soon, they're going to be huge when all is said and done.
