It is a better idea in winter than summer. As I don't use recirculating systems, I use a bit of vermiculite, not really needed in winter, I still like how it breaks up the substrate a bit and can hold on to nutrients between sheets. I have a theory that plants are a bit like people, old people and babies have lots in common. So I feed my baby plants old people food... a bit of MPK before I put the seeds in.
