How to wire the CFLS

So I bought some splitters to screw into the porcelain lamp socket. I was planning to just hang the porcelain lamp holder from my conductors and screw in my light splitter into it. The conductors would be secured to the wall via metal straps. The only problem with this is I am losing my ground wire. I had an idea just to hang the lamp holder from the junction box like I have with my 100W Halogen light so I can actually ground to it.

I provided a pic with my 100w halogen setup. Would you recommend the same for my cfls? The way its set up is so i can raise or lower the light at will. I am thinking the same would be fine for my cfl's but would rather write it up without a junction box so there is less weight and strain on the nmd90 14" wire.

I just noticed I MAY have placed this thread in the wrong spot. Please move if needed!!

Basically i just need a definite yes or no on whether to wire the lampholder up without a junction box and therefore ground.

I should add the only things running on this circuit breaker right now is a single 100W Halogen, It is grounded.

you can hang it by the wire as long as it is tight and secure. I wouldnt recommend it though. any home improvement store will sell chain for like 12c per foot. Get some of that and secure it in.. I am doing the same thing, but u can get less industrial sized sockets for CFL's. I am doing the same thing in the next couple days.

mine are wired without a ground. dont stick ur finger in the sockets. Most wired sockets u buy dont have a ground. Just a + and -. not that 3rd wire which is a child safety tool

Thanks for the fast reply man!

I did take a year of electrical so I have some background. I know the sockets don't have a ground which is why one is supposed to ground to the junction box the socket is suppose to be in. The 3rd ground wire is a bit more then just a child safety tool. It will take the load of the circuit if anything goes wrong and just spread if through the metal of the box so nothing else gets electrocuted or caught on fire.

I will for sure buy some chains, that's a great idea I am not sure why I did not think of it. I will most likely wire up the lamp holders with the junction box now since with a chain I wont be concerned about the weight of the box being too heavy for the conductors.

I would actually recommended grounding if its not a huge deal for you. There may be no children nearby but one power surge could lead to the plastic melting or a fire.

Thanks a lot for the discussion!

Cool thanks man! Since u seem more knowledgeable that I, I have my lights, and fans plugged into a surge protector with a ground... Is that not sufficient?
(im helping you answer your own question). :weed:

Haha yea you did. I could do it but it wouldn't be the safest. I cant say that I'm 100% sure but i do believe plugging them into a surge protector should be sufficient. As long as your lights are wired correctly and you had good showmanship then it should not be a problem.
