how to properly check soil ph

How can you properly check the ph of soil without buying a digital meter? I have tried mixing a little soil with water but it gives me a different reading each time. any ideas?

After you've watered the plant you get run-off from the drainage holes.. I always fill my lil test tube up with that water and check that pH to get a good idea...

Well you could buy litmus paper. It is alot cheap than any electronic pH tester.

They say for an accurate reading ya collect the first water drips that come out the bottom.
