How to keep young plant in veg?

One of my friends kept an outdoor plant in flower through the whole of winter (-8'c is about as cold as it gets here).
He took a cardboard box it could fit into easily and popped a 60watt incandescent (yes you heard me right) bulb in the top.
He would put the box over the plant at night and take it off in the morning.

Sounds good mate, I was thinking more like 3 foot away, don't know if that's enough.

If temps are a problem ... Keep the clones on a heat mat in a small box use 2 100 watt 65000k cfls and keep them as close to the plants as possible. I do this and I have had small clones in constant veg for months.. 12/12 flowers. keep em on 16 hrs on..
