How to get pics in threads?

Just wondering how some people get their pics in their threads. I am going to start a grow journal and want to post pics in it so people can visually see progress. All I have right now is a digital camera and a computer(plus the wires to upload the pics onto hd). I've seen people use image hosting websites but I dont know how to set them up or if they are private/secure enough to use.
