I have some plants here that like to drink a lot. I give them water or feed every 3rd to 6th day ,I only have Pete Moss for soil. could I water more between feedings to keep the soil moist because it dries up fast. The plants are not droopy between feedings but it seems like the hairs are shrinking because of the heat and not getting enough water it seems, what do you guys think??

from what i understand peat should be mixed with some perlite or something .. I dont do hydro but pretty sure thats why they made mixed peat mediums . anywho peat will break down after a while although people claim its inert; im pretty sure it becomes organic after a while

sorry been drinking a little to drinky to support me claims

I grow in ProMix HP which is almost all peat but has lots of perlite and a couple types of lime to balance the pH as peat alone is pretty acidic.

I've always done the feed - water - feed - water . . . thing but have recently switched to feeding with every watering but just half what I would usually. And trying to water sooner so the pots are fairly wet yet. Instead of 3L each time they are only taking 2L to soak them good. That way the concentration of nutes is more steady and the plants seem to like that.

The older hairs start shriveling up long before the plants are done and heat will hasten the process but lack of water doesn't hurt unless your plants are all dried up. Like mine will be if I don't get off my ass and go water the thirsty girls.

Lol yeah go water them. That’s pretty much what I have Pete Moss with perlite and some other chemicals to balance out

Is it a brand name product like Sunshine mix?

I failed to score a bale or two of the HP and was thinking of making up my own version from plain peat moss then adding perlite and dolomitic lime but hate to have it not work as well. Damn local garden center shut down almost a month ago already and the closest place is a 2 hour drive.

May have to switch to DWC for some of my growing over the winter.

Peat Moss
What's the back of that bale read? The front says Master's Mix so must have more than just the peat. My HP has a list of ingredients so yours may as well.

Canadian Sphagnum peat moss (65-75%)
Perlite - horticultural grade
Dolomitic and Calcitic limestone (pH adjuster)
Wetting agent
Mycorrhizae - endomycorrizal fungi (Glomus intraradices)

The more I look at that list the more I figure I could make my own version of HP for about half the price. Hmmmm . . .

I used to work at the peat bogs in Ft. Langley, BC. Floating around on a barge manning the spray hose to wash the peat through a grate after the clam digger dumped a load on it then it was pumped to the plant a mile away for screening, pressing and drying in a huge rotary dryer that sounded like a 747 taking off with a giant gas flame blasting through it. We got high and a bit f'n drunk and sank that damn barge one night. The owner's son did it with the digger so nobody got fired. lol

I find peat moss on its own doesn’t hold water for long, but if you cut it with compost or earthworm castings, you have some finer particles that retain water. You want to water heavily, and let the roots start getting dry. Like literally the day your plants would start to wilt should be your watering day. Forces the roots to make more branches and search for moisture.

I recycle into promix and just reammend continuously. My plants just keep getting better.

It is an excellent idea to make your own, wouldn’t be hard at all!

Plants always want more water during flower than they need in veg. I feed mine once a week and then water 3-4 days later.
But during flower I have to water more often. Even more so in the hot summer months with out door. This year i have one plant
in particular that wants more water than all the others. It keeps going droopy, but as soon as I water it it bounces back.

you can see in the top picture plenty of perlite in the mix. i'm not surprised your plants drying out. looks like a pretty large plant in a 3 gal container. similar to what i grow and similar mix too. I give my plants in 3gal pro-mixHP about 5-6 liters of water every other day and get 20% runoff. thats what i'd recommend.

something to consider is relative humidity and airflow. If your humidity is very low you may want to consider wrapping those air pots in plastic
