how many cfls?

whole bunches... probably around 24 or so, all depends on how you set 'em up and reflectors and such.

You can certainly get by with less than 24. I would recommend at least 2 per plant. 3 would be more towards optimal.

I don't have any experience with hps or mh, but most likely yes. It takes a lot of cfls to reach 10,000 lumen per square foot (equiv to sunlight) and you have to reposition them every day to keep them as close to the plant as possible and not burn them.

24??! :o

good ratio would be on per plant, would leave you with lots of light to veg with. i veg right now with only 3 18W T5s and ain't doing bad:D
bare minimum i would say would be 4-5 CFLs for that amount since they put less light out then a T5.

about placement of CFLs in veg you know or?

Tyler, check my grow out dude. I just took out my 2 20w tubes and put in 8 26w CFLs. They are BRIGHT, but I my plants aren't very big yet so theres not light penetration problems.

Am I vegging under too much light? I've got 2 - 100 watt fluoros (10,000 lumen each) and 8 - 23 watt cfls over 12 plants. They are short, stocky, thick leaves, and the nodes are stacked one on top of the other.

no-one ever can veg under too much light, but so much isn't really need to get the job done. it is like with firepower, a bit more fells always lot more comfortable, well depending on what end you end up:lol:

just a quick question for my own benefit, how are you keeping it cool enough? what kinda extraction are you using?
