How far above soil with 1000w hps

Ok so i got my easyryders germinating, once I plant them, how far above the soil should I put my 1000w hps? Im going hps the whole way through on a 20/4 light cycle. thanks again guys.

I would say 2 feet til they pop.
 
you need to know what light it is ? if its an air cooled with tempered glass or a cool tube you can get closer then if its an open reflector.put it at a foot and keep your hand on the top of the plant for a min and see if its too hot if it is move it up if not your good.also if you have a lot of plants it needs to go high enough that the tops of the outside plants are getting light..

this rule works great for adult plants but not for seedlings. they are too fragile for a 1000 watt light to be too close. keep it at a couple of feet for the first couple of weeks.
