Tell you what, bro.. read my grow journal as a starter. It's in my sig. I'm verbose, but it details a LOT about how to keep things tiny, since I'm a PC grower. There are pictures, too. Basically, how I'm keeping things small is a combination of things:
1. Genetics - you will surely fail if you start off with a monster sativa and you have 2' in height to work with. Lowryders or 80-100% Indica are naturally small.
2. LST: Low Stress Training - in a nutshell, bitches love it when you tie them down!
3. Topping: Leave the bottom node, but chopping the top off keeps it bushier and gives you 2 main colas.
4. Pruning: Since you do not want height, you want to maximize weight on the lower nugs. Trim some leaves to get them out of the way of developing lower buds.
Also, don't let people get you down. The vast amount of info. on this site can be daunting.. especially when you're just starting. I know.. that was me about 10 months ago. For the record, it took me about 8 months to read and plan my grow to fit my surroundings. Rushing things just isn't an option with growing, unless you really don't care about getting busted or fucking up the plants that came from $50 seeds, etc.
Again.. my journal and the people who have posted on it are, in large part, interested in micro-grows. PC Case, Rubbermaid, Mini-Fridge.. and mostly CFL.
Peace and luck.
