Jeep usually 8"-12" for a stationary 400 with no air cooled hood.
Put your hand below your light as JOC suggests above, back of hand to light. The back of the hand is more heat sensitive. The distance your hand is comfortable, after a minute, is the closest you can place your light to your canopy.
Another method is to put a thermometer at plant height below the light, make sure you don't get above 85F. The hand/heat method is sufficient, this is more for a curiosity. I've got a laser thermometer that I'm having a lot of fun with.
