How bad is it to veg with HPS

I am preparing for my next grow.

I have a small pioneer jr. t-5 set up and 2 150 HPS at the present.

Do I need to buy some bigger t-5 stuff to help veg, then switch out the bulbs for flowering?

Or should i go gonzo and buy the MH lamp?

Vegging under HPS is not bad. It is not the best, it will give you slightly wider nodal spacing, but it is not bad. I have used both a MH and HPS together for vegging and that worked well.

I found out through research that if you have an hps only ballast that you can use an mh lamp in it as long as it is rated less than or equal to the wattage of your hps ballast. IOW, hps ballast can use mh of same or less wattage. mh ballast can not use hps lamps.

Also, mh runs a quite bit hotter than hps, so be sure of your ventilation.

If you have a 150w HPS you cannot get a conversion bulb At least I cant find one as the smallest MH they make is 175w you need the 175w MH ballast and a 150 HPS conversion bulb I think...

Good point, I use a 600 watt hps, so I have a few more options. Just go with the hps 150 then, all they way through flowering.

Keep it close enough to the plant but not too close, I hear 8" to 12" away is good for the 150 watt. I have to keep my 600 watt 2 feet away from my gals.

hey man as far as i know hps would be OK. But MH put off a little more of the blue spectrum that helps plants veg. Also the change over from MH to HPS when you start to flower coincides with the plants natural cycle. So again switching from the blue spectrum to LOTS OF RED and cutting the lights to 12/12 is a drastic change that lets your girls know its time for the buds :P I currently veg with a HPS and I do just fine BUT i could do a little better with a MH. THATS AS FAR AS I KNOW and thats what I learned off this badass site. hopefully someone else chimes in just to confirm it for both of us.

Hell yeah!
What do you think about supplementing with some t-5 warm bulbs

t-5s are FANTASTIC for clones. laying an hps or mh against clones is a bad idea because it stresses them out. however as to supplementing them for HID, which stage are you referring to (veg or flower)? During veg I think it would actually be a good idea, it might save you some money and as long as you kept it pretty close to the girls i think it would be enough. BUT i have noticed that vegging under an hps or mh makes my stem-inter-node spaces closer together. It is my personal preference. I would still use hps for flowering for obvious reasons :) hit me with some more questions man, im still learning too and answering questions helps me out a lot.

I use HPS to flower but it is also great for veg,but a mixture of both specs of a MH and HPS is the best.

Higher intensity makes the internodal spaces shorter. If you can bring your lights closer, you get more light. HID lights can burn plants at close range, but you don't have to keep adjusting them to keep them hovering above the canopy like you do with fluoros.
