Well you kept them alive that's always a plus.
1) I would say the plant needs more light. Keeping it in the shade has caused it to stretch like that. I understand if you have them in the shade for privacy reasons but if you want a bushier plant you will need to find an area with some more sunlight.
2) You can keep plants in smaller containers but this means you must water and feed them more often. Did you give the plant any Nutes? You should probably get a bigger pot for your next grow though.
Think of this as a learning experience. That plant (if its a female ) will probably give you less then an eighth dry. But who know maybe it will take off and become a monster before budding season, which is right around the corner BTW
