Horse manure ok?

I just found a source of composted horse manure, probably 20 years worth that just keeps getting added to. It's a pile about 70ft long and 4ft high. One end is pretty much well aged, black soil the other is fresh poop. I can't say I've ever really heard of anyone using it, but I'm assuming it's going to be just as good cow manure? Just looking for some confirmation before I start getting it. I can pretty much have as much as I can haul away.

i worked at a riding stable when i was a kid, and i can tell you it grows awesome mushrooms. horses eat pretty much the same shit as cows, in a different ratio. i can't imagine you'd have any problems with it.

It is as good or better than cow manure. It is not as hot as cow manure, which is why I think it is better. It is comparable to sheep manure imo.

found this, says its not good for flowering plants by itself, but mixes readily into compost where you can compensate for that

horse manure is good stuff.just get a ton of weed seeds in it why lots of folk don't use it.i would go for that old black stuff not the fresh stuff

Cool, thanks. I'm gonna grab a truckload of fresher stuff to mix into the compost pile going for next year, then I'll start layering that well composted stuff all over everything else.

My roommate looked at me very strangely when I excitedly told him I knew where I could get virtual unlimited amounts of composted horse shit. I guesses it was warranted, who gets excited over, literally, free shit other than people who grow things?

It's not even going on my weed, that's all indoors and I don't bring in stuff from outside. I recycle soil and compost indoors just for that. I got wiped out years ago from an infestation of root aphids that I brought in with outdoor compost. That's never happening again.

This shits all going on my veggie garden, my fruit garden and going to be used to backfill a large, low, area of my yard that I want to turn into a small orchard/vineyard. Right now it's just a few inches of mediocre top soil, then shitty sand/ gravel fill under that and it needs to be raised about 16" to stop it from flooding in the spring. I figure 8-10 PU truck loads should get it close.

I have had great luck mixing equal parts composted horse and chicken with steer mushroom compost. Just add some micros and potash!

Like it was said before...horse she's is great just has more seeds in it. Happy growing.

Me myself wouldn't use horse crap in my indoor grow.
Will have bugs in it or eggs from insects.

One year I got some old horse crap that was really old. Put it in my gardens outside in my flower gardens.
Weeds in 2 weeks and still battling those same kinda weeds 20 years later.

That is why I use cow manure. I wouldn't use horse shit unless I mulched the duck out of it or used garden fabric to lay in the bed to keep the weeds at bay.

Cows eat seeds and make shit full of seeds also. Thermal composting cures that. So does light tight mulch. Manure also has straw or rice hulls or wood chips and sand in it with urine. Most manure I use inside is commercial bagged. Black Kow is wonderful.

Generally the old end of the pile is what you should use. Old is good.

I know this lol but there are more seeds in horse then cow. I personally don't like or would use the bag stuff. I like it straight from the farm. The bagged stuff is too processed for what I use it for. Tho I grow outdoors. Just finishing up 400 gallon boxes of amended manure. That stuff is awesome.

When I raised veggies it was lime and manure and not much else. Not much else needed. Manures are king outside.

cows have two guts they rechew the cud horse don't that's why more seed in it,compost gotta be pretty dam hot to kill seeds

I use horse manure/bedding in my compost and in my soil mix base have a 1:1:1 ratio of aged manure, rice hulls and pro mix. I grow outdoor and use a cover crop so i don't really worry about any weeds.
