Homer's 2nd Cfl Grow: Amnesia Haze x G13 and Blue Cream (Pics and +Reps)

Hey everyone!

After a two month hiatus since my first grow, I've been seriously missing the growing experience, so I'm back for round 2! This time I'm hoping to double my yield and get at least an ounce off each plant using a combination of LST, topping, and TLC. Everything I know about growing I learned on this excellent site, from people like micro.grower, SmeLLyTreeZ, MoNk0, Archminister, to name a few, and I hope to continue learning and share my knowledge (and +reps) with anyone who posts here.

So... here are the details:

Plants:
- Two clones obtained from a NorCal dispensary:
1) Amnesia Haze x G13 (sativa dominant, 10-weeker)
2) Blue Cream (indica dominant, DJ Short’s Blueberry x Serious Seeds AK-47 F1, 8-weeker)

Medium, nutes, and space:
- Fox Farms Ocean Forest soil
- Vegging nutes: pure blend (3-2-4 npk)
- Flowering nutes: dyna-gro (3-12-6 npk)
- Each plant is in a 2-gallon pot
- Currently, both plants are in a walk-in closet. Eventually will buy/build cabinet and invest in a carbon filter setup to contain the odor during flowering.

Lighting, ventilation, and odor control:
- Currently vegging under 2 x 24-watt 6500k T5 tubes (from JumpStart)
- Will soon add a few more 6500k cfls, and eventually change to 2700k clfs for flower
- Oscillating fan running in closet
- ONA jar (good enough for now, definitely won't suffice later on)

And here are the pics...

Day 1 (Jan 14). Amnesia on the left, Blue cream on the right

Day 2 (Jan 15). Amnesia & blue cream in their new 2-gallon pots after a healthy feeding of pure blend.

Day 3 (Jan 16). First LST using adhesive hooks ($4) and floral wire ($3)...

Depending on how the new growth looks in the next few days, I will top and/or LST again. The goal is to have short plants with lots of colas. If anyone has good advice as to how to proceed, by all means post it here :)

Peace & happy growing :leaf:

Subbing in bro! I like that wire. When i finally run out of what I have, I will hunt it down. Im sure its much easier to bend. Good find man. As usual, your plants look fantastic. For new folks taking a look at this thread...take a seat and sub in. It will definitely be one to watch.

thanks for the compliments, arch. yeah, the wire is easy to bend and stays where you bend it, but it's so thin it could potentially be irritating for the stem, i don't know, time will tell -- if it is, i'll get the stuff you used!

nice bro subbed on this one.
thanks lee, good to have you on board!

Subbed, looks good. Like the hooks for the LST.
for sure lotsO. i got the idea from arch and monko who used a similar thing, but i figured instead of screwing in the hooks i'd get these adhesive ones that support up to 1lb of pressure. i think that should be good enough to hold the stems, at least until they've been trained...

speaking of which, i just took a fresh look at the ladies and had a new vision for an lst... maybe it's good, maybe it's just the sour diesel talking. but i think i might go for one of those -- what are they called? -- circular lst's where the stem goes around the edge of the pot. or if i manage to top the bitches correctly, maybe two half-circles around the border that meet at the other end. there's a name for that but can't remember (that's definitely the sour diesel)... the plants are so little and pliable right now, anything seems possible...

homer just make sure you leave the hooks larger than the branches to give them lots of room..you should be fine.

for sure arch. the hooks i'm making are large, but the material is thin enough that it could potentially cut into (or irritate) the stems if i leave it long enough, you know what i mean? anyway, i'll be keeping a close eye on that.

i found this link which is something similar to what i would like to do...
http://strainguide.org/wp-content/uploads/growfaq/1744.htm
probably won't come out exactly that way, but if i get at least half way around the pot, it should be pretty sweet. still can't find the name of this technique though.

quick, picture-less update on the plants today: new growth is starting fast. the internode distance is tiny, which is great. i tied down the stems a bit further and shifted the lights to hit more from the side i'm encouraging it to grow. i'm gonna wait another day or two to decide if it's worth topping and do two half-trips around the pot, or do just one trip around the whole pot like in the diagram.

peace homies, and happy mlk day.

Nice link man. Im sure you will look out for your grow as usual and make it another awesome job. Short internode spacing is an indicator of good lighting and fast growth. You will have plenty of flowers with the plants on their sides.

Thanks Arch. You're right about the short internode thing -- my last grow I had no idea about this stuff when I first got the clones, so the first couple of weeks I didn't take advantage of that and let them grow out way too tall. Anyway, it was all a good lesson for this grow.

Im subbd, this grow look very promising bro. Respect man.
Thanks king blunt, good to have you here, +Rep for posting.

Picture update coming up.......

hey everyone,

not much new to report, just a few pictures showing the lst'ing with the floral wire and a little more new growth. i took some close-ups using my phone camera + a 5x loupe i got for $6 (borrowed the idea from micro.grower)... hopefully those look good!

so, here are top views of amnesia/g13 (left) an blue cream (right)...

i need to come up with names for these ladies. any suggestions? smellytreez, if you're out there, i could use your plant naming expertise lol.

peace bros.

Nice bro..glad to see you off to another great start. I dont think you will have any trouble with that wire.
well, turns out the wire has been a little irritating to the stems... after about two days in one position, the stem started sort of growing into the wire (or the wire cutting into the stem, however you wanna think about it). just a little dent, nothing serious. i'm gonna look for something a little thicker so that this won't happen anymore -- where did you get yours? i'll have to look back at your thread lol.

Nice bro.. Did u get that amnesia seed as a freebie?? I think attitude tossed me the same strain.
thanks lee. actually i picked it up as a clone at a dispensary in oakland california. i've read a lot of good things about g13/amnesia haze, supposed to be a soaring uplifting sativa. if it's anything like my sour diesel, i will be quite pleased :)

big update of the day: i topped the girls! (or i might have fimmed them, i'm not 100% sure).

here's a link to the topping vs fimming diagram i used to guide myself:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090827023156/cannabis/images/6/6f/Fimming_v_topping.jpg

and here's what i did, starting with "blue cream":

looking all sexy and LST'ed:
b_jan22.x1.jpgb_jan22.x2.jpg

close up on her "top":
b_jan22.x4.jpgb_jan22.x3.jpg

after snipping the top off:
b_jan22.x5.jpgb_jan22.x6.jpg

it was kinda nerve racking, i have to say.

that was the practice round. now as an expert topper/fimmer(?), i was ready for amnesia/g13...

sexy/lst:
a_jan22.x1.jpga_jan22.x2.jpga_jan22.x3.jpg

locating the top:
a_jan22.x4.jpga_jan22.x5.jpg

and after the snip-snip:
a_jan22.x6.jpga_jan22.x7.jpg

this one came off in one piece. it felt like a shame to let those beautiful 7-pointed leaflets go to waste, so i followed the advice of an old pro and sauteed them in a little butter with salt and pepper and had them as a little snack. don't recommend it :)

the plan is to let these babies recover over the next couple of days and hopefully start separating two main branches to begin the wrap-around-the-pot. if anyone has advice on this maneuver, by all means share your wisdom!

peace everyone,

Nicely done homer. I hear you about being nervous. I was so afraid of screwing it up that I almost couldnt do it. Good job topping them. You will benefit from it for sure...bring on the colas.

thanks arch. it's amazing how quickly the new growth starts after topping. i think tomorrow or the next day they'll be ready for the second stage of lst, beginning to separate two branches around the pot. i think i also need to start trimming some fan leaves in order to stimulate growth on the main branches. that's another nerve racking decision... which leaves to trim off? they all look so nice and healthy!

ooh, tough to say so far, depending on how the lst goes, i'm going for 1 oz off each. that would be more than enough for me (my gf doesn't smoke). planning to keep wattage pretty low, around 200w total in cfls for the two plants. so 2 oz = 56 g / 200w = .28 g per w, i could live with that :)
