Homemade LED?

i made one for my saltwater reef but nothing for growing, if you do decide on a diy use good leds like cree or luxeon and go with a big one piece heat sink (heatsinkusa.com) the only problem with a diy for growing is the many spectrum's of light needed, just see what everyone is using and try looking for them. try ledsupply.com and ebay

Your led is gonna kick ass dude!
Well done!

..did you solder yourself? is soldering difficult? I'd love to do what you have just done dude!
Thanks man! :D
Yeah I did solder my self :) It's not that hard, just look at some youtube guides, and maybe get an extra led or two, in case of an accident :b

I'm running the red LED's at roughly 500 mA and the blues and whites in the middle at 670. :) There's all in all roughly 50 Watts of LED's in that fixture. the drivers, cpu fans, other fans and thermal glue are chinese, from dealextreme, and Cree LED's also from there. I bought mcpcb plates (the stars to mount Osram LED's on) and the Golden Dragon LED's from Mouser.
In addition I will add three of these (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/10w-455nm-180-lumen-blue-9-led-emitter-metal-plate-9-11v-100733) to the last 3 CPU coolers :)

Would you recomend what wattage for the soldering iron? Many thanks, and let us know how it works!! But as I said, it's gonna kick ass :D

If I paid you, would you build me one?
Well, it can't really pay of to build your own light :b The problem is, that when you buy the LED's, you need to buy hundreds before it gets cheap.. Take for example the deep red Golden Dragon+ from Osram. Buying them at Mouser, if you want 30, they cost 6.39$ each.. But if you buy more than 100, they cost 3.83$ each...
In addition to get the best Bin-code (highest efficiency) you need to buy full reels... which is 1200 Leds...

Just to make an example a 350 watt DIY led, with 100x660nm, 100x625nm, 46xCool white and 23xDeep blue (the ratio promoted by KNNA himself) would cost 1400-1500$ to make including all materials except tools.

This LED would be top quality and better than any other LED made by companies, if we get the top bins.. Unfortunately, it is not certain that you do.

I don't have a problem with spending the cash on the best components, and I have no desire to buy in bulk...my main issue is that I don't want to build it myself.

I costed it all out as a few people on these forums already know what I am up to ! But when you are gonna use the highest quality chips available it's not cost effective unless you've got loads of money and ur doing it for fun.

if you have the money you should get a pre made LED with at least a three year warranty. this is a DIY thread, for people who want to do it themselves, for whatever reason
