Why is Cannabis Illegal?
Cannabis has been legal for thousands of years right up until the 20th century. When Christopher Coloumbus came to America, one of the things he imported was Cannabis Sativa seeds. In America, Cannabis became a cash crop and was used in trade and in farming. George Washington’s primary crop was hemp, and Thomas Jefferson stated that some of his finest hours have been sitting on his porch smoking hemp. Evidence suggests that Abraham Lincoln may have smoked hemp. The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. In 1906, the Food Drug Administration was formed. In the early 1900s, Mexican laborers immigrating to America used marijuana to relax after a long day of working. White Americans didn’t like these immigrants, and thought marijuana gave Mexicans superhuman strength and turned them Insane.
Most Americans had never heard of Marijuana. They were focused on other issues such as heroin, opium, cocaine, and alcohol. Alcohol was prohibited in 1919 but was later repealed in 1933. A man named Harry J. Anslinger was made head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Harry J. Anslinger started a “relentless” warfare against marijuana. Anslinger would shape the attitude of America against marijuana, and was a highly influential anti-drug director. In the early depression era, Anslinger got 9 states to sign an agreement against drugs. Marijuana, or reefer, was notorious in the Jazz culture. This resulted in the spread of Marijuana use along blacks. Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway were two notable individuals at this time period. Anslinger used Racism as a propaganda tool in his yellow journalism.
Marijuana was now known as a drug that would make its users insane murderers and would lead to communist brainwashing. Telling lies about marijuana made newspaper owner, William Randolph Hearst, rich. This was the way people viewed marijuana until the early 1960s.
The 1960-1970 Counterculture
The perception that marijuana was bad for you changed. Marijuana users were now peace loving, anti-government hippies. Because so many people were trying marijuana, for the first time, Marijuana was being studied for its effects. It is less addictive than Alcohol and nicotine, and less physically harmful than Caffeine. Conservatives became fearful and hateful of this generation. President Nixon created a new all out war on marijuana using the DEA.
Modern Culture
Now, 14 different states have legalized medicinal marijuana. President Jimmy Carter supported the decriminalization of marijuana. Many famous people have smoked marijuana including Louis Armstrong, Al Gore, Vincent Van gogh, Ray Charles, Terry Gilliam, Robert burns, Queen Victoria, Bob Marley, Elvis Presley, The beatles and many other individuals. The average deaths caused by alcohol per year is around 75000. The average deaths caused by tobacco per year is around 400,000. The average deaths caused by marijuana per year is less than 10. I was talking about the medicinal uses. Learn to use better grammar. It is people like you that keep marijuana illegal. :finger:

I hate to do this because it happens to me too. Although, since you're pointing out his mistakes... it's functional illiteracy to say "that" instead of "who" following "people".

It is not possible for an Englishman to make bad English, As we are the soul inventers of the language and reserve the right to change it whenever we like if enough English people speak the same bad English then proven through the ages will get added to the language tree either as an example of bad grammar or accepted. And just to prove it when I started English lessons 37 years ago you could not start a sentence with and, wow I can now 37 years later. So remember when correcting English people beware you can never be right.
