I am using a 4x6 tent to grow 8 plants, giving me 24 sq. ft. to work with. It is recommended below that once about 20 you want to be using 1000, or the other option is to use two 600 watt fixture. Would it be better to spread out the light on two lower powered hoods, or have one high wattage hood concentrating the light in one area?

I assume your talking hps?
A 1000 covers a 5x5 area really well, a 600 covers a 4x4 area pretty good. 2x 600 will cover your space better, plus you will get better penetration because you have 2 light sources so you will get side lighting cross over from 2 different angles penetrating deeper into the canopy.

1000w hps=1000w single source
(2) 600w=1200w of spread sources

The 2 600's are also the higher wattage choice, not just the spread choice. And in your space the better choice.

what @Greengenes707 is trying to say is that 2 CXP420 would rock that space way better than any hps or mh ever would :) but he is sold out of them anyway... I went with a timber kit this time greengenes, better luck next time!! your fixtures look awesome... I will eventually buy one.
