High ppm tap water?

aSo my tap water is around 460 ppms after 24 hrs w/ lid off jug, does this sound high? Not me I'm high yes but is that high ppms for evap tap? Oh and ph is right around 7.5 looks like according to color kit. Is that also high then again I need a good ph meter

My RO from down the street reads around 30 ppms

460 is quite high.

Although ppm's tell us alot, it can't tell us about chlorine and chloramine levels, heavy metals, nitrates and phosphates etc that maybe present in your water.

IMO unless you know what makes up your water I would go for RO and get yourself some Ca and Mg along with your planned nutes.

No worries my man.

Don't get me wrong you could use your tap water but a water analysis from your water company would help with the breakdown of which minerals etc are in your tap water. But then you'd have to tailor your nutes to your water.

The least stress is RO IMO.

Yeah 460 is pretty high use RO water. 7.5 ph is pretty high as well you want 6.0-6.5 for soil.

Forgot to talk about your pH.


This will depend entirely on your growing method/medium.


Soil then anything from 6-7 depending upon any ammendments to your soil.

Hydro 5.2-6.2

Coco 5.5-6.5

460PPM is not high for water. What the hell are these guys talking about? My city PPM is 600 and we have a 99% water grade. My homeboy from New York his PPM test in at 900, so how the heck is 460 high

^^^ dude you need to call the city if your water is 600-900ppm the legal FDA safe limit for city tap water is 550ppm. My tap water is in the 450-500ppm range, very hard water. The issue is you dont know what that ppm is made up of tap water has chlorine, chloramine and fluoride added into by the cities in most areas plus all the other unknowns. The only things that get tap water in my house are the fresh water fish tank and the outside house plants like the bushes, flowers, grass ect.

In the UK 460 is excessively high.

My tap water tests at 0.2EC. Around 200ppm.

A friend of mines tap water tests at almost zero.

So before you start spouting about high ppm's of tap water and "us guys" and what the hell we're talking about I suggest you take it up with your water company. As I already stated about analysis.

Most plants are fine with higher ppm's in the water but you need to know what minerals are being added at the source in order to know how much of each nute you need.

As previously mentioned ALL tap water generally has fluoride and chlorine/chloramine. Some water companies add phosphates to slow down the corrosion of copper pipe work and nitrates too along with calcium and magnesium for stability etc.

With 900ppms in your water you maybe able to get a mineral breakdown and find it contains almost everything you need to grow plants.

But without the analysis sheet its like pissing into the wind to find a happy growing formula.
