Hey guys, i have a problems with small black flies. As i was reading around some people said to cover the top with white sand and put up fly traps. The problem is that i didint find any white sand around Paris (or i didint search in the right places) My question is: is it ok to substitute the white sand with perls? those brownish little balls.

I dont think lega/hydro nuts will give the same effect as sand, did you look in Pet shop`s I reckon some "hamsters" and stuff use some kind of fine sand to "wash" them self in ? dunno just a suggestion

Just get any sand. You should be able to get it in any building supply place labeled as "contractors sand" or "sharp sand", even playground sand. Dirt cheap and you wil have a lifetime supply of it. Diatomaceous earth works great as well, but doesn't work when wet, not a problem as long as you are letting your grow rigs dry out between waterings.

Good luck!

As said, any sand, but if you get contractor's or building sand, rinse it first.
"Mosquito dunks" work well to get the flying ones.
Then after you get the situation under control, cut back on your watering.
Constantly wet environment invites and breeds them.

Thanks a lot guys. I was confused because of the white sand, now i know that any proper sand works, i will try my best to get building sand from somewhere! its just hard to communicate with the french sometimes :P

Again thanks a lot for the fast replies <3

they are called fungus gnats. kill the eggs and larvae with h202 solution, and prevent further infestations with a layer of sand and/or sprinkle ground cinnamon works.
