Help with roadtrip to California!

Three friends and I are planning on going to a roadtrip to Northern Cali from Illinois. Where are good places to stay??? Best places to see??? Its a spur of the moment thing lol

Well, Iowa sucks, Nebraska sucks, southern Wyoming sucks, denver is great, boulder, and vail are beautiful, Salt Lake city is cool, northern nevada sucks, northern cali is beautiful. that's my experience. Not sure what route you're taking but I've taken 80, that's probably the most direct route. The majority of the ride is cornfields if you stay on 80. I stopped in cheyenne Wy and I swear I had to stay in a motel next to a power plant. I don't recommend stopping there. it's smelly. What to see? I didn't stop at too many destinations but I respect the land and I enjoyed seeing all the different places. I took some pretty sweet pictures along the way.
