Pillow cases are not going to work for you. The holes are too big. If they did work - no one would buy bubble bags.. they'd buy pillow cases.

Just get some silkscreen,cheap,effective and lasts forever.
You can also sew it into bags if ya want.

Gumby hash is the way to go for the true hash taste, just make sure your Wife knows of you'll come back to a nice clean bowl.
Another alternative is ISO hash. I don't like the taste of the honey oil and it is so messy.
I got lucky, my last trip to the hydro store they gave me a set of 1Gal bubble bags, love them, now if I can just get it to melt like sub cools.

Can't wait to pull my first hash load this week! Got my jock horror trimmings in a garbage bag in the freezer for last 4 days in prep. Got a 4 bag, Payload Extractor series bags with pressing screen. Got 3 - 5gal white buckets with lids and no holes from wal-mart. Can't wait!! 
Any tips/comments on types of water and ice to use? Does it even matter?

I would disagree.
What do you consider a "refined" way to collect resin and trichomes? Rubbing your hands all over it? rolling it across a screen? Naked virgins running through the fields of pot.. then smoke their pubes?
I am going to guess that you have never tried the gumby method. I am just making an assumption.. tell me if I'm wrong.
I have enough respect for you to not start an argument with you over it.. but I'll challenge you on your reasoning as politely as I can.
They are 2 totally different methods of collecting trichomes. Bubble bags can produce great hash.. but you have to use a 7 bag system to get decent anything. The first bag you pull you throw out if I'm not mistaken... this contains all the chlorophyll, and other nasty bits of crap floating in your wash. Then you pull a bag that's - ok.... then you pull your first decent bag... well.. in a pillow case- even if you could pull every single trichome out of your mix.. you pull all the other shit from your water into your hash too. Then - how do you collect it from a cotton pillow case? It's cotton.. it's a bitch getting it off the bottom of a bubble bag - and it's designed to be able to collect the trichs at only the bottom of the bag.
Using the gumby method- you allow the trichs to settle and you syphon off the other crap that a bubble bag set would filter out in the first bag. (chlorophyll for example has a SG of 0.8 and is not water soluble..so it won't break down in water... and it floats.) You are left with all trichome grades mixed at the bottom of your container.. but it's not mixed with all the other impurities from the degrade of leaf material from "processing" it..
Just so you know Fdd.. I'd love to read more about how you pull your bubble... and I'm not claiming to know more than you on hash making or even close (I've read at least one of your threads on the subject) and am still trying to figure out how much ice is enough.. so no I don't.. but I know enough about gumby hash from doing it and smoking it that it's cheap, effective, and the hash is great quality. Logic tells me a pillow case would be a messy waste of time. My own bubble bag experience even tells me that you need the expensive bags to be able to separate the particulate matter out first or your first bag (mine's a 3 bag system.. I wish I would have ponied up the extra dough for the big boy set of bags).
I'll bet you're going to post a link to a thread where you pulled 2 lbs of full melt from a bucket of lukewarm water with a dishrag to make me look like a tool.. so go ahead...

i use 3 different sized bags, counting the ones in the machine.
