I have a 150w hps bulb with a wing reflector will it work without using a ballast and how far should I keep it from my plants I'm replacing my 250w cfl bulb from apollo horticulture

Edit. In fact I'm sure it won't work, trying could be dangerous.

Get a ballast and the light should be no further than 10"

Is the ballast not inside the reflector unit?Often the case with low wattage lamps. HID lights REQUIRE a starting ballast.
