I use them if it's cold in the room that I am germinating in just to sprout the seads then I remove the humidity dome and if not to clod remove from the mat. It's best to monitor the temps so as not to cook the roots of young plants. It's easy to do using small starter ots or trays. I put a thin dish towel down between the heat tray and mat but I don't yet have a comntroller. good luck.
My heat mat stays 10F above the ambient room temp which in my clone room is 75F. I have found 85F to be perfect for germination, seedlings and cloning.
