Have LED lights progressed alot recently?

Hey RIU I at one time tried LED and to say the least at the time I thought wow, these suck-and a huge waste of money! Regardless that was years ago and im sure they have improved, but how much? Are they still ridiculously expensive? What is a good comparison for a 1000 watt hps these days?
 
Still pretty expensive for a direct 1000W equivalent panel really, but getting cheaper...HID is just so cheap for the sheer power you get out of them. You can get really great results with LEDs now though if you can deal with the initial investment cost.
 
So what would you recommend for a direct 1k replacement, say from the moderate priced all the way to obscene (like best LED ever)
 
the best lights i have tried are no longer for sale ... area51 AF600s. Havent seen any results with their new lights ,... it's much lower consumption. my AF600s are 600watts and the results are outstanding but they do run hot. u need good ventilation...
 
How big of an area do you have to cover?

I am currently using 4 x 4ft LED tubes @ 18w doing a really nice job over 2 plants in a 2 x 4 tent. Next grow I will add 2 more. At some point soon, I expect tubes to be ~ 40w; with a DIY fixture, I could get 8 bulbs in my tent. That would allow me to grow 4 nice plants
