i would like to know if halogen lighting would be ok for plants ya know which bulbs i mean the flood/security lights people use on there driveways ????

I have had my experience with halogen lights and can say this:

There are 2 types of halogen bulbs, these kinds:

and these kinds:

I've used both during those first few grows when nothing seems to go your way.
The first type gets some 2000-2500lum, does not heat up nearly as much as a 250W HPS and works without a ballast. It may not have the ideal spectrum for growing, but if you can't find HID bulbs or ballasts, this is a step up from fluros or cfls.

The second type is just bad. It does get some 7000-9000lum but will heat up like crazy, needs a ballast that is located in the fixture. The fixture is damn heavy and hard to keep over the plant, causing great worries and the spectrum is all wrong. Never ever use this, it's a big energy consumer with disappointing results.

stay away...too much heat and the plants don't respond to them. this sentiment has been expressed by many for years now, but whether people listen is another thing...

its the second one the floodlight linear type i am using it at the moment as my other light stopped working i have managed to mount it ok and my extractor fan is keeping the temp down
otherwise i would have to use 2 58w 5foot floras

It would be much more beneficial to use the fluorescents, as the Doc says Halogen's are the wrong spectrum for growing. Low lumens, High heat.

I personally would only use them along side fluorescents if I needed to warm up the area.

yeah, avoid halogen lights. The main reason I would stay away from them is the amount of heat they produce. To get ample light, at the very least the equivalent of several CFLs, the heat produced from such a halogen light(s) would burn your plant.

ok i am going to revert back to the floras untill i can get another bulb for my sodium light
cheers for all the info guys
thanks again
