Growing without airstones..?

I ran out of airstones one night, so I left a 5 gallon bucket bubbling with no stone. It never seemed to affect the plant, so even when I got new stones, I left it "straight toobin". It has been over a week, and the plant is looking as good as ever. Better maybe?

Am I wasting my money on airstones?
