Topping works, to stop the plants stretching too much, and encourages lateral growth (branching). It is stressful to the plant though, so I would only advise it during vegging. You could also FIM (similar to topping, more fiddly, but can lead to more than 2 tops), or supercrop.
I usually supercrop when I want to encourage branching, since I don't like chopping bits off my plants if I can help it, and it is less stressful than fimming/topping.
You could also consider LST if you want low profile, "bushy" plants, or even ScroG, if you can be bothered installing a screen.
