Note to anyone growing in Spain! If you are growing outside in Spain take precautions to insects eating your seedlings (dont learn the hard way like me)! Crickets are a pain in the ass and ants can course problems too, cover young plants with a fine mesh (like mosqito mesh)! Chicken wire will be needed for larger animals, hedge hogs to a liking to my plants!

Hey thanks, I am in the same situation. I live in Barcelona and have been growing on the terrace but ya the bugs Ive gotten so far are little tiny black ones and also white gnats. Never any crickets, are you growing on a ground level? and what part of Spain?

costa blanca mate! growing in massive olive tree pots(the pots they come in when delivered from the garden centres). its right down the end of the garden so there is a lot of vegetation here, sounds like you need to get some sort of bug spray on yours!

I live on the california central coast..I hear the climate in spain is real close...we have bugs, but we also have all kinds of critters that devour those bugs..at most I get 2 or 3 leaves eaten-leave the leaves on 'cause the plant eaters stick to the injured ones...it also helps to have naturally healthy plants from healthy soil...a sickly amy winehouse plant jacked up on chemical fert's is not gonna' fight her way outta' fallujah! it all starts with healthy living soil. check out bio dynamics! google it! do it! and then enlist an army of insects, lizards, ARACHNIDS...poor little herbivores! they don't have a prayer!...here's another neat trick that will keep all pests(including rippers!)away- fire ants! don't ask me how I found out!

ive got some stuff you dilute in water, its got essential oils in it i think (cant be assed getting up to look) its supposed to stop the little fuckers breathing, seems to be doing the trick! i really use it for spraying round the general area as a prevention more than anything! lost a lot of young plants to little critters

yeah.. that time with the fire ants on my plants makes me want to try growing one directly on the mound...it was like some nature video on plant/animal symbiosis the way they defended it(little bastages!).plus, they love the water(it's dry here); and their mounds are some of the best aerated soil I've ever seen(thogh not the most nutritious). I know one thing...harvesting would be fun! or trying to even touch the plant!
