Grow roots in AG?

Hi guys,

If i plant a clone in the an AG sponge, will it grow roots?
If not, what's the best way to grow roots before transfering it to the AG?

Thanks.

BTW this will be my first attempt at growing. :) Wish me luck

Is what you are calling a clone a cutting? You can clone in the AG, my results have been mixed but, I have never done it with their sponges. I had better results in rockwool cubes, once the roots appeared trim the cube with clean razor and put the in the AG holes. Let's see what the others say. I am interested in this as well.

A friend of mine will give me a cutting from two of his plants and I want to start them in my AG.
Do I need to put anything special in the water or only plan water under the roots starts to show?
Thanks

Just plain water to start, do you have a ph test kit? I don't the AG nutes, ever, do you plan to use them?

BluCat: I haven't had good luck with their sponges for anything but seeds. What did you clone it in? You had to stick your cuttings into something. I usually use rock wool cubes like ow.douglas but I don't use the razor blade trick because I frequently have roots coming out the side of the cube as well as the bottom. When they're showing roots I carefully roll them into a smaller size cylinder on a cutting board and stick them into my planting deck. I leave them about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch above the deck. If you make them flush with the top you may see nutrients coming up out the top. If you still have a leaking problem out the top break off a piece of a bamboo skewer and make a little vent for the nutes to go back down into your reservoir. Your A/G will irrigate them well because even rolled up your cubes aren't that dense. You'll want to get some white two inch net cup covers from your local hydroponics store to keep out the light and prevent algae build up. That's worked fine for me.

Yes I have a ph test kit. No I wasn't planning on using the AG nutes, I haven't bought any yet. Any recommendation?

HSA:
I haven't clone yet. That's what I'm trying to figure out, how to do it. I've never done it before.
I'll continue to browse the forum and read about cloning.
Thanks for the tip about rockwool, I'll check that out.

If i put some rooting powder on the cutting and put them in a glass of water, will they grow roots?
Do i need to change the water every week?

Any advice is much appreciated.

I have had a 100% success rate with the AG. 100% of 12 clones. I use rockwool with a rooting hormone. The rockwool plugs that are circular, just cut in half and it's perfect. I only plug in the pump for seedlings and clones...Other than that I unplug b/c the roots just clog the pump up and breaks

BluCat: there are a lot of tutorials on cloning on the internet, that's where I learned. Here and at You Tube and Grass City they had some excellent video clips I saved and studied and there are articles with photographs. A cheap way to get into it is to go to the ninety-nine cents store and get a hobby, (Exacto type), knife kit and a small plastic cutting board that'll fit inside one of your wife's, girl friend's or mistress's Pyrex baking dish. I like to use cloning gel and you can get that at your local hydroponics store along with a set of three cloning trays and a humidity dome that'll cost you about twelve bucks. It'll accommodate fifty rock wool cubes. You don't need the heater unless you live in a basement or above the Arctic Circle. We keep our house around 75 degrees all year and I haven't needed a heater.

Don't forget you're going to have to folair feed them with a spray bottle for about a month and they're going to want to eat as often as you do, (That's how I remember when to do it). I bought a two T-5 tubes florescent lamps fixture from The Home Depot and a cord end you have to connect, but they come with good directions, for about twenty five bucks. I suspended it on a PVC frame I made for about three dollars and I adjust the height with wire link chain. It works great. Just follow the directions at each step and you'll love cloning.

BluCat: As far as nutes are concerned, I'm sold on Technaflora's "Recipe for Success." I don't know how they compare with other brands but that's what my hydroponics store started me on and my plants love them. In my 3 A/G'S I got about a year out of their "starter kit."
You might also want to go to your local hydroponics store and get a free copy of, "USA MAXIMUM YIELD INDOOR GARDENING." On page 100 in the, "Beginner's Corner," they have an article on cloning called, "Cloning your favorite plant." It's only a couple of pages but you might find it interesting if not informative. Hope that helps.
