The CANNABIS BREEDER'S BIBLE: THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO MARIJUANA VARIETIES AND CREATING STRAINS FOR THE SEED MARKET

After buying Greg Green's The CANNABIS GROW BIBLE, and being a little disappointed with it (I much preferred Ed Rosenthals GROW BIBLE) I am undecided as to whether I should buy this book.
The science of genetics is a subject I know very little about and, as the UK regards cannabis growing a crime, every space needs capitalising on to the maximum.
This means that I do not have the luxury of using an area to experiment with creating seeds
(It would mean not growing actual bud in that area - a huge sacrifice - whilst, at the same time, risking just as much criminal chastisement).

But I do have a massive interest in the process and would like to learn how strains are crossed to create new varieties - hopefully with the best aspects of both the parents.
IS THIS BOOK THE ONE THAT HAS THE ANSWERS?
IS IT WRITTEN IN A WAY THAT KEEPS THE SCIENCE ACCESSIBLE and INTERESTING - YET STILL INFORMATIVE???

IF YOU'VE READ THIS BOOK I WELCOME YOUR FEEDBACK

If you've read another book that deals with the same issues, please post your opinions.

I haven't read the book, or read ones that deal specifically with breeding, but i have come across some wicked e-books online that deal with cultivation.

You can torrent them if you want i can share some links :)

I have this book sitting next to me on the desk right now. If you want a crash course in the basics, it is decent, if you have taken any introductory genetics or know the basics of inheritance it probably won't do much for you, at a list price of almost $22 USD i would say pass, check into a basic book about genetics or plant genetics and it will serve you much better for around the same price. Genetic inheritance is not magically different in cannabis from every other plant, you definitely pay a premium for the cannabis specific stuff.

I got mine for free from a friend after he stopped growing so i gave it a read, but you're just as well off finding a used, old edition of a college textbook about genetics in my opinion.

Good luck

It's a decent read, a few sections had me lost with scientific terms that I had to look up. I did grasp most of the material in the book and it has some good information I took some notes off. Not a end all be all source of breeding info, bit a good start since it's tailored specifically to Cannabis, it makes it easier to relate.

Hello guys and thanks for responding.
My main worry about buying another Greg Green book is that his other publication 'The Complete Grow Bible' has areas with virtually no information (such as appropriate EC levels for plants at different ages/sizes)
but in other areas there is a ridiculous excess of information - For example his chapter on the Light Spectrum goes far beyond what is necessary for most growers. it's almost like a minor physics work on the nature of light.
AND, towards the back of the book, you get the feeling he's run out of information but still has to fill 30 or 40 pages - so he incorporates lots of mindless filler. How to roll a joint - with diagrams of the process, How to make an apple pipe - again with diagrams. And other extremely basic stuff.
I cannot help but think that if someone is researching cannabis cultivation they already know how to smoke it - Or they don't want to smoke it, they want to grow it.

GENETICS
I probably will look for internet resources about plant genetics. Like the man said, Cannabis hasn't some magical difference to other plants.
And, instead of spending £12 ($18) on the Green book I can spend the same amount on the ROBERT CONNEL CLARKE book - CANNABIS BOTANY
It looks very interesting and has been strongly recommended to me.
CLARKE has recently released a new Cannabis title which looks amazingly in depth, unfortunately the cheapest copy I can find is £43 ($58).
Maybe I'll treat myself after my next crop is finished and I save a little money....???

I just read Green's Breeder's Guide after finding it online as a free, downloadable PDF. Its via a subscription service with a intro deal offering a free month of downloads so I figure its legit- I certainly don't intend to steal his work.

Far as the book itself, I found the writing okay but the concepts and info were presented clearly and for the non-geneticist so I found it useful. I was able to get through the book in 2 days and am more informed for having read it. If I find a used copy, I'll pick it up but it won't be my go-to breeding reference- that would be Marijuana Botany by Arthur C Clark.

Good luck!bongsmilie

I found the Robert Clark (Arthur C Clark wrote science fiction, not books on cannabis) book to be a great read as well, much better than the Greg Green material. There is a link available to be found on these forums somewhere i believe with a pretty good library of downloadable PDF versions of most grow books that are of any value at all, at risk of breaking some forum rule here promoting pirated material i'll let you dig into that yourself, but it is out there.

I would also recommend checking into various university departmental websites regarding plant biology or genetics, some/many have free resources available up to and including interactive lessons that are quite good.

This book http://www.amazon.com/The-Cannabis-Breeders-Bible-Definitive/dp/1931160279 by Green is a great introduction to genetics, I read this book some months after its release, and agreed with the shit storm that followed that there were considerable errors, in this guys understanding of the subject, canna, and his knowledge of botanical genetics, back in June 2005 ...? just google it, I can only imagined he left for darkest Africa, with all his saving by now ...the life of shame.
his earlier work was just as trashy but OK for tennies wanting to blaze with bagseed and cFL's http://www.amazon.com/The-Cannabis-Grow-Bible-Recreational/dp/1931160589/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y/188-6656689-0942761

for a better read but old ..this one will get you up to speed: http://www.amazon.com/Marijuana-Botany-Advanced-Propagation-Distinctive/dp/091417178X/ref=pd_sim_b_1/188-6656689-0942761

and I'm currently growing seeds from the book recommendation; http://www.amazon.com/Cannabis-Sativa-Essential-Marijuana-Strains/dp/1931160937/ref=pd_sim_b_8

The real issue is....the markets changing so fast the books can't keep up, no sooner than a really good book is out on canna then its out of date, but thats cutting edge genetics for you, seek out botany papers
