Marijuana Prohibition Is Alive And Well in Florida
Sun, 02 May 2010 12:25:07 By: Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director
Share This Article
Despite this amazing era of increased cannabis awareness and acceptability in America, there are still strong pockets of political resistance. One of the most important states that needs to exit the era of Reefer Madness post haste is the political bellwether Florida. Of America’s political behemoths–CA, IL, OH, TX, PA and NY–Florida is the state that has least embraced cannabis law reforms, defers way too much to law enforcement’s self-interests and it’s political leadership–Democrat and Republican–are lockstep prohibitionists.

To reform cannabis laws in America means reforming the laws in a politically important and diverse state like Florida.
However, when concerned citizens in Florida, like South Florida NORML’s Karen Goldstein, contact her elected officials like Governor Crist seeking parity with about one-third of the United States’ citizens who currently reside in states that have either decriminalized cannabis, or have ‘medicalized’ it, they instead receive disingenuous Reefer Madness-soaked replies from unelected, self-interested prohibition apologists.

Good old conservative Ohio has one of the most lenient marijuana laws out there, thankfully.

one of the reasons i put up the poll is to see how many people on here have been to / live in florida to show some support and to show tax dollars that can be made!

Yeah Florida is harsh. I thought about moving there but since I grow more than others do, NO FUCKING WAY MAN! The state of Arkansas hasn't done anything yet, but two of our cities have marijuana as a low law enforcement priority. Eureka Springs in Nov. 06' and Fayetteville in Nov 08'. I helped circulate the petition in Fayetteville. It's a foot in the door for the growers in the Natural State. We'll see what the future has to hold.

Isn't there some sort of petition going around to put medicinal MJ on the ballot for 2010? Florida does have the most rediculouse penalties for MJ! But you can be a fkn child molester and get off with probation!!!! What type of shit is that??? The $ FL could/would make by taxing MJ would be outragous! Not to mention new jobs! When right now u can't even get a job flippin burgers! It would also put an end to drug smuggling (at least the MJ side of it)! Lower the prison population that are locked up for a simple dime bag! It'll let law enforcement focus on REAL crimes and not on a freakin bag of fucking "grass"! And most important... Help people that are really sick and in seriouse pain! Seems to me that only positive results would come from legalizing MJ in FL or anywhere else for that matter! Right now there are all sorts of legal piosons that do WAY more damage (death) such as alchohol, tobacco, prescription drugs (which btw are exploding in FL right now)... But all that's OK!!!! Marijuana is BAAAD!!!! Get the fuck outa here!!! Its all these old, senile politicians like the Gov that have their head up their asses! In my opinion its just wrong that FL hasn't legalized MJ yet! My grandma just died not too long ago and I'm sure MJ would've helped with her pain and her appetite if only it were legal! But they rather just keep pumping people with toxic shit that cures one thing and adds on 10 other side effects! Sorry... I rather have 1 medical condition than to not have it and have 10 other things that are even worse! I always kinda laugh inside every time I see a commercial for a new med, and they show the person all happy n shit, and then they say "oh by the way... this med might kill you if you blink your eyes too fast" or some stupid shit! Anyways... I totally agree, Florida needs to legalize already! Its just freakin stupid if u ask me!!! Lol... Sorry for all the rambling! This is just one of those subjects that REALLY get me goin!

I agree a few points to your reply, and your NOT rambling! I dont think anything in this years election about MJ. Florida has a shit ton child molesters, and over populated jails. Actually the prison system in florida is one of the biggest and ever expanding.

about the sick , florida is heavens waiting room( google "the town "villages" in florida)

in florida it isone of the most corupt states in the country, so many politican just like else have there hands in the special intrest groups pockets. until we quit buying weed and give money to norml its going to be this way. IMO

This may be a stereotype post. Isn't the major population of Florida shall we say the elderly population? It is a fact the older people vote damn near religiously and that generation is also of the reefer madness era. The idea of a high population of voters with that mind set would not surprise me why Florida is a hold out.

Yea I'm in Florida and I know that the People United for Medical Marijuana is working on a ballot initiative.

www.pufmm.org

I'm trying to get people talking about the subject by writing to news stations, radio stations and elected officials. The elected officials interests are in the elderly, that's for sure. I heard one of the reasons Governor Charlie Crist is being voted out of office is because he didn't stay good to his word to lower taxes for the elderly... They have an influence over elections. :/

Ya most deff! Florida is where everyone comes to retire so its full of elderly people that are more than likely against legalization! But like John D. mentioned, there are a few organizations that are getting signatures everywhere so that it gets on the 2010 ballot. The messed up part is (I read somewhere) that in order for it to be passed it has to be approved by more than 60% of voters. I'm not much into politics but that seems kinda unfair that it can be denied if 41 people out of 100 vote no! IDK if I read wrong or something but if that's right, then it just seems like the politicians in FL are just trying to make it that much more harder for it to be passed. I just don't get it! They're so against something that has been medically proven to help, and like I said in my last post... Will creat jobs (which FL needs desperately), make $ for the state, etc! Kinda makes me wonder who the REAL drug pushers are! IDK... I'm just a pissed off Cuban that has a medical condition to where I'm in constant pain and likes to smoke and would rather do it legally! BTW... Thx Fishing420 for starting this thread! I wanted to do it myself but I guess paranoia set in! Thx... I can finally get all this shit off my chest! +Rep big time for stepping up for Florida!

marijuana policy reform not on the 2009 legislative agenda

Although President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have both stated that the federal government will no longer expend resources interfering with state medical marijuana laws, Florida legislators have yet to catch on to what modern scientific research, the public, and at least 14 other states already know — sick and dying patients do not belong behind bars for using medicine that has been recommended by a doctor. Please contact your legislators today and ask them to introduce medical marijuana legislation next session.

Court established defense
Despite the fact that a medical necessity defense has been established by Florida case law, patients remain at risk of being arrested and jailed because legislators have yet to enact a medical marijuana law. To review a 1991 case that outlines Florida's medical necessity defense, click here.

Public opinion in Florida
Not only have Florida courts endorsed the use of medical marijuana, so has the public. In 1997, 63% of registered Florida voters said they favor approving an amendment to the Florida Constitution legalizing "medicinal" marijuana, according to a poll by The Miami Herald.

Harsh penalties put everyone at risk
Although Florida courts, public opinion, and 14 other states reflect a trend that recognizes the legitimate use of medical marijuana, Florida patients remain exposed to the state's harsh possession laws. Every single medical marijuana patient in Florida continues to live in fear because Florida's penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana are among the nation's toughest. You can read more about Florida's draconian marijuana laws and their impacts here.

Are you a victim of Florida's harsh marijuana laws?
For those who have been convicted of violating Florida's inhumane marijuana laws, life can be difficult for years to come. Public housing eligibility, the ability to adopt or foster a child, the right to vote, and the ability to receive student aid — to name a few — can be affected by a marijuana conviction. Please click here to learn more about what you can do if you or someone you know has been a victim of Florida's draconian marijuana laws.

Future legislation in Florida
Obviously, Florida is in need of marijuana policy reform. The time to act is now. Please contact your state legislators today and ask them to sponsor a medical marijuana bill in the Florida Legislature. After you have e-mailed your legislators, follow up with a call to their office and leave them a message reminding them that their constituents support the right of a patient and doctor to decide what treatment is best. Click here to find out who represents you in Tallahassee and locate their telephone number. If you are able to start a dialogue with one of your legislators, you can send them a copy of MP's model bill by clicking here and downloading it in PDF form. MPPs model bill is very similar to Rhode Island's law, which has been working well since 2006.
Radio activism

Another excellent way to open up the discussion about medical marijuana is to utilize the airwaves. Please click here to download and share MPPs public service announcements with radio stations that might be interested in airing these educational and entertaining messages.

It is important to remember that legislators, like you, listen to the radio and read newspapers every morning, so please be sure to take advantage of the materials we have available that employ these forms of media.

The goverment fuks up everything it touches. Why would you think marijuana would be any different?
As far as medical marijuana goes that is just being used as a stepping stone for full legalization.
Coke, meth, and herion would make the sick feel better. I don't think marijuana cures anyone.
Just because mmj laws are past in your state does not mean you will be able to grow it or get a script or even obtain it legally. The goverment is a bunch of fucking idiots.
