Got Gnats!

Thanks for updating! Keep us in the loop on if they come back, seems the sand works well. They like to lay eggs in the top layers of the soil and the sand must be not attractive for them.

I'm having good luck bottom feeding coco using neptunes (stinks)

A lot of my friends like the nectar of the gods line, you don't need all the bottles just get the basics unless you like to splurge for your girls.

I use Down To Earth organics

I spent the biggest part of a weeks pay check on Bottled nutrients before I discovered organics, I don’t think I’ll ever go back it just didn’t work for me, it seem like every time I open the bottle I nearly killed a plant

You have not posted what type of soil you use and where you get it from. Unless I missed it. So I suggested you try B'cuzz mix or maybe even Pro-mix. No more fungus gnats. Not once in years since I changed over from Fox Farm.

Yes I use fox farm, but in its defense The soil I’m using is on its 2nd maybe 3rd go around. But I might try promix for half a run with my amendments to see how it does

We had a major storm blow through that city with 70 mile an hour winds
So now I have no power fungus gnats are the least of my concern now . Good thing it was nearly lights out for them anyway

Since the storm hit I had to move all the girls to a room with some light.... we had lost power to most the city. Power came back on, so I moved the girls back to their homes. .... so the girls got moved quite abit and the seal of sand around the edges got separated...... I found only 2 gnats this morning... I’m happy

I use gnatnix on the topsoil and if i see any of those little F*ck*ers flying around they get a visit from mr electric fly swatter.

That’s funny the word fuckers comes in the play a lot when we’re talking about fungus gnats

Still no gnats! Not one today. The sand and wind I guess fucks them up. I don’t care for the sand, cause I like to top dress with solid organics but I’ll work it out

Perhaps a pot with a lid that is convenient to open/close remove/cover so you can still feed/water top-dress style and then prevent access to the gnats from the top. I found they like to come into the bottom of the pots as well if there is access, so that would need mitigated.

Hello to all, I don't read all the thread but I'd like to tell my experience about gnats a issue that destroy 3 mother plants I have and some plant in bloom and I had for months before fix, and sometimes I see some gnats fly in my room.

In Italy is pretty uncommon recognize gnats (now I know the problem they give and also how adult are and I see in very garden store) so I don't find no one that recognize what I had, so I search in a USA forum and I found the answer.

The first solution I used was H2O2 and sticky traps, the H2O2 don't work the sticky traps are very good for the adults, so I change and I use mosquito dunk every irrigation, and it help me but not fix, after mosquito dunk

I decide to use nematodes and with nematodes I WIN the first battle but not the war at the second use of nematode I see no more gnats in my room, I also bought some carnivorous plant that works like natural sticky traps
I start to make some vermicompost and in my worms farm i see STRATIOLAELAPS SCIMITUS that kills gnats larvae so I also use that and for now I don't see nothing.

This is my experience and I hope someone can find it helpful , other advise I can give is :
don't make the soil too wet, if u can do irrigation from the bottom using a tank is the best way, u can also use sand on topdress or diatomaceous earth or neem cake.
I love biological fight so if I can choose I prefer predators to other solution, nematodes work very well (for the italian that read don't buy verdepieno's one they sucks, other predators are ok but their nematodes don't work well) stratiolaelaps works really good and I haven't try but I read is the best one Dalotia (Atheta) coriaria.

So gnats for me was a big issue I hope u will fix faster and easier than me

Thank you, another recommendation for nematodes !!!

The top dressing with sand has killed almost all of them, in the last few days I’ve only seen 2or3. I have been bottom feeding with Mammoth P and General hydroponics flora licious plus

Just let the top layer of soil dry out a bit and sprinkle on some diatomaceous earth. They will not be back anytime soon but keep dusting for prevention. Adding neem seed meal in your mix directly as an amendment along with DE will help keep them away forever.

I’ve been recycling my soil, some pots might be on their 3rd go around. Is there a way to kill off the larva in the soil before I start a new grow with it? I’ve got a totefull of recycled and amended soil, there is some gnats in it and thought I’d ask.

I use organic ceylon cinnamon. I've heard it can hurt some organics but i've never had a problem.

Yes like I said before just use diatomaceous earth and neem seed meal as soil amendments and/or top dressing. Gnats won't be back....or thrips or garden slugs or what have you.

DTE makes the meal! I like them! Their description says it can be steeped in water which makes no sense to me because the N is insoluble I’ll give it a try

I ordered yellow double sticky back cards from Amazon. They are super sticky 8x6 a 20 count for $10.99
They come with hangers and holes in them. I like them and the price is awesome. Made by “candy home”

10 days in since covering my top soil with 1” of playground sand and I saw only 1 gnat today.
My tote of soil that I’ve been cooking for several weeks, I treated it to some sticky traps and a round of Neem oil spray..... no gnats there either. The sticky traps are awesome.

I had an infestation pop up overnight. Made small traps with Apple Cider Vinegar and a drop of dishsoap, cover with saran wrap and poke holes with a needle, tack, etc.

I wiped out an entire infestation in less than a week.
