Glueing ideal holders to heat sinks?

I just set my iron to 300c and it worked this time the 4awg wire is stuck to the damaged led but I did notice the LED got extremely hot whilst doing this.

Will this not damage the LED?

It's difficult to say for sure because of the wire gauge you're using, but 300C isn't specifically too hot... it's more about the amount of time the heat is applied to the contact point. If you have a small driver laying around you can power a single LED with you could do a test to check. You could also try a temp setting of 250 but if it takes longer to heat the wire you could run into the same issue. Maybe try tinning the pad and going straight from tinning the wire to the pad while the wire is still hot. You will just have to experiment and see what you can come up with. Also, since leaded solder has a lower melting point it might be a better choice for this particular application.
 
I have just found out the drivers I have coming are 14 awg coming out of the drivers... so 4 awg would be pointless I think...

I'll wait until my new 15 awg wire comes and try with those. Hopefully everything will be fine at that point
 
Yeah it says it's for electrical use so must be rosin.

Hopefully with this new solder and 15awg wire I won't waste any more cobs

4awg wire is so thick that I can't seem to get the solder to melt fast enough and get the wire to stick to the holder.

I destroyed an led by leaving the iron on it too long trying to melt it

You have to Solder wires BEFORE on the heatsink otherwise it pulls the heat away. like it should .
