GETTING CLONES FROM SOMEONE? How do you know there safe?-

I have too much time invested in my set up to go introducing bugs into my environment. Im sure if bugs get into my environment its 100% my fault.

With that being said many places/providers/co-ops/collectives/dispensarys/friends/ect offer clones for free or for donation. While the offer is tempting it could be detrimental to an operation! It could cost a LOT of $, ruin an entire harvest, set someone back a long time or even cause someone to lose there beloved strain all together! Not to mention all the work involved with cleaning and starting over.

*How do you inspect clones you bring home?
*What are some tips to buying clones?
*How much $ is too much when buying clones?
*I have hydro and clones are in soil, should I not buy them?

I hope this thread can shead some light to the MMJ community and help stop the spread of bugs/disease!

New clones at my place get their own little area far away from the bug free zone for at least a month until I make sure they're bug-free.

The only light I can spread on the matter is

*I have hydro and clones are in soil, should I not buy them?

Most of the strains that I see available that I like/want are in soil mediums. After doing some research most people "shun" the idea of transplanting from soil to hydro. There is such a high risk of stress that most lean to the "its not worth it OR last resort" sort of thinking. There isnt much information on transplanting clones from soil to hydro let alone any instructions or tips on the matter.

-HOW I DID IT-

*Poured luke warm water into a gallon sized pot
*Removed clone from party cup/pot just like you would to transplant to larger pot.
*Held soil/roots in right hand
*Held stem (just above soil line) with left hand
*After about 15-30sec the water penetrates the soil making it very soft.
*I used right hand to plug in "air pump" (from DWC/ aquarium) and proceded to hold a 1/4" air line under the rootball/soil.
*I held it like this untill I could feel there was a very limited amount of soil attached to roots.
*I lifted it out of the water and I used the same water in a spray bottle and washed the roots off.
*I could now see my clones were "rooted" in Root Shooters (Jiffy+Advanced Nutrients).
*I placed the root ball+root shooter and all in my hydrosystem/net pot and covered it with hydroton/your choice of medium.

The plants never drooped or wilted and the next day the leaves were actually standing taller than when I got them. Both of my Grape God strain's that I transplanted already had roots poking out the side of the net pot after only one day!!!

Is it possible? I think so!
Will I do it again? For sure!

Yup. they need quaretine.

Sweet! That was fast!
*What do you guys do with them for the 30days your waiting?
--Do they sit in temp controlled area or can a floro covering it somewhere work?
--Do we have to worry about them getting rootbound or do we need to transplant?
--Should we wait on adding nutes? Do pests feed on nutes?
--What is the longest a plant can go before showing signs that it has somthing? i.e. How long should u wait in quaretine?

You need to get yourself a 30x magnifier first. You can get them at Radio shack. the source or on line and hobby shops. A jewelries loop 30x is great. Take it with you and have a look at the base of the underside of the leaf, your looking for small round balls (eggs) and or tiny spiders, most have 2 dots on them. They are very small. If you see any pass on them. If you don't see anything, take them home and keep the quarantine for 10 days and keep checking them every day. If after 10 days nothing shows up your good. The normal life cycle is 5 to 7 days.

To use soil rooted clones just set in some hydro-tron and rinse gently with ph water than put in your system.

Buy a good 30x you will use it often and also to tell when your buds are done.

woodsmaneh is correct, I meant I usually leave them for a month but at least a couple of weeks just to make sure there isn't any bugs. You can use whatever light and transplant them into a little bit bigger container if they become too nute dependent for ya. Temps should be 75-80. Nutes are fine to give if they need them and bugs feed on unhealthy plants so as long as they are strong, drying out between watering and growing quickly bugs are discouraged.

It might be a good idea to dip any clone you get in a neem oil/soap solution to kill any mites! I wish I would have done that w/ some free clones I recently picked up... they turned out to be infested with mites!
