I'm a gardener, i been gardening almost all my life. When i was 8 years old i had my own little garden next to papas 4 acre garden, and i been hooked ever since. Since i'm waiting for the funds to re-purchase my grow equipment i thought i would start this thread to give me something to do and a way to contribute to the site in the meantime.

Feel free to contribute anything that you feel that would be useful to someone and i will added it to this post in the appropriate categories so only thing someone would have to do is go down to what problems or whatever they are looking for (i.e pest control), and when they click the link, it will take them down ! If you already have a thread, just add you link and i will link to your thread from here.

Please Suggest Categories along with your submission!!

I Wont be adding everything i know at first, this is due to me not being able to think of something until it pops into my head lol..

Organic Pest Control (Works great on leaf eating pests)

I Grow couple different types of pepper every year in my gardens, mainly cayenne pepper as i make hot sauce and powdered cayenne pepper. I Found this out one day as i was sitting out in the barn thinking how to stop these pesky leaf eaters as i didn't have any money for poison and i was out. People may of known about this at the time but i didn't as it just popped into my head.

I went to the house and pulled out a big 1 gallon zip-lock bag of powdered cayenne pepper, and added 2 teaspoons of cayenne peppercayenne pepper to 1 quart of water and brought it to a simmer and let it cool. After it cooled down to room temp, i strained it through a cheese cloth and poured the liquid into a spray bottle and preceded to spray my plants..

While it seemed to work pretty good, i wasn't satisfied so i went back to the kitchen and and played around with the mixture until i found a mix that satified me and here is what i did.

  • [*=1]4 teaspoons of cayenne pepper (powder)
[*=1]3 cloves of garlic (finely chopped)
    [*=1]1 whole onion (finely chopped)

Put ingredients into a pan and a bring to a simmer.
Let the mix cool to room temperature and strain it through a cheese cloth into a bowl.
Take funnel and your spray bottle and pour the liquid into your spray bottle and spray you plants.

At the time i made this, i didn't know about this and though i came up with something special (lol) but after i got my internet back, come to find out that the organic growers has been using this method with variations of the ingredients. Never tried anyone else variations since mine works really well, in fact i have no problems with deer and leaf eaters munching down on my veggies any more after i started using this.. Now i make large batches from my pack sprayer.

I Don't know how this will do on other insects like gnats, but you could give it a shot and let me know how it worked for you.

Building your own Worm Farm from 5 gallon bucket.

Items Needed

  1. Three 5 gallon buckets
  2. One bucket lid to fit
  3. Newspaper or Coco coir
  4. Brown Cardboard
  5. Drill
  6. 1/8 Drill bit
  7. 1/4 Drill bit
  8. 1/16 Drill bit
  9. Hot Glue Gun
  10. Dark Colored spray paint (opional, only need if you have light colored buckets)
  11. Duct tape or another strong tape (optional)
  12. Window screen (optional)
  13. FOUR 2" X 2" PVC fitting or something with the same dimensions slightly larger or smaller.
  14. Large Bowl
  15. 1 or 2 lbs of red wigglers (ebay: live worms)

Take the bucket lid and drill 1/4 holes in the top like the picture

Take two of the 5 gallon buckets and drill 1/8 holes in the bottom the same way you did the lid

Take both buckets you just drilled holes in, come up 1 inch on the side of the buckets from the bottom and drill 1/16 holes all the way around like in the picture.

* OPTIONAL * Take the dark paint and paint the buckets outside only and let dry.

* OPTIONAL * Take the screen and cut it to fit the outside bottom of the bucket, and then inside of the bucket lid and use the duct tape to attach it to keep the worms from falling into the sludge reserve and crawling out through the top when you don't want them too.

Take the four, 2" x 2" PVC fitting and hot glue them in the bottom of the bucket (the one with no holes) like the picture.

Take the newspaper and shred 1/2 strips into a nice big pile.

Take the brown card board and tare it in small chunks (you don't need much, maybe the lid from a shipping box would be enough)

Take the chunks of cardboard and shredded newspaper and wet them, not too wet... think of a rung out sponge.

Take the shredded news paper and the cardboard chunks and mix them in one of the buckets with the holes, make sure that their bedding is at least 4 to 5 inches thick.

Take this bucket and put it in the other bucket where the top bucket will be sitting on the pvc fittings.

Take your red wigglers and put them in the center of the bedding and put the lid on them.

After about 10 mins open the bucket up and bury their food in the bedding over to one side. Move their feeding place in different locations every time. Never let the worm bedding try out, keep it moist at all times! use a spray bottle.

Now you have a catch bucket (the bottom bucket) that will catch all the goodness for worm tea, the worm home (middle bucket) and the harvesting bucket when you get ready to harvest the worm castings.

Harvesting your worm casting from a 5 gallon bucket farm.

There is going to come a time when you're wanting to harvest your worm casting from your 5 gallon bucket farm, the easiest way i found out to do this with out making it too much of a daunting task is by doing this.

Take your harvesting bucket and fill with the bedding materiel and food.
Place your harvesting over into the "home" bucket and don't feed your worms.

After the worms have finished off every last trace, they are going to slowly stat moving up in look for more food and eventually, about all of them will make their way up in you worm harvesting bucket then you will take the home bucket out and now, the harvesting bucket will become the new home bucket.

This is how i do it, and this is by far the best way i found.
