FUCK spider mites...

...little mite bastards are trying to kill my babies!

Um, stats on the plants with the problem: growing indoors, watered once a week, growing in soil, been on 12/12 for just under about 20 days. My camera isn't good enough to get a picture of the mites, so sorry, no pics.

I have read everything I can find here on RIU about spider mites. It sounds like neem oil or pyrethrum foggers are recommended the most, but it isn't clear whether or not it's bad for plants in flowering. I read some posts where they say you shouldn't use it while flowering, some that say it's ok up until 2 weeks before harvest...

So I went out and I got some ladybugs at Osh, and some neem oil and a pyrethrum fogger at the hydro store. I'm going to try the ladybugs first, see if they make any difference. If they don't, I'm going to set off the pyrethrum bomb, and then treat the plants with a neem oil mix. I've been keeping the temp lower than normal, since they say high temps make the problem worse.

Pretty much, I'm ready to wage war on these little mite bastards. I'll let you guys know how it goes. I'd really like to hear from any of you who've had this problem before, tell me there's some hope! (even if there isn't, LIE TO ME!)

you have really already made the decision, the lady bugs will be like little soldiers, marching thru eating every bug in site. If you use the neem or pyrth now you will kill the lady bugs. VV

lol, my brothers know I'm going to war, and they both keep joking about it. They both suggested I play theme music while I release the ladybugs. One said Tupac's "When we ride on our enemies" and the other said Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"

Yeah, the ladybugs came with a warning that they shouldn't be used on a plant after it's been sprayed with a pesticide, because it'll kill them too. That's why I'm using the ladybugs first, so if it doesn't work out I'll just let the ladybugs free and then bomb the mites.

But has anyone here ever used ladybugs? I kinda want to get an idea of how long it takes the ladybugs to make a difference...Or just some reassurance that someone else has used them successfully. I have no idea how much or how fast they eat...

Damn, I dunno how easy it's going to be to get a picture now that I let those ladybugs loose. I don't want to go losing my little soldiers. I'll see what I can do. But I can tell you that the leaves look like they are covered in tiny white spots, they're starting to grow curved, there are little black mites crawling around on and under the leaves, and I've only just started seeing little strands of web.

i used a neem oil concentrate from wallys world. killed all those bastards! it rlly does feel like going to war tho, kill em all!!! lol im going to have some fun when they wake up sometime down the road.

lol, well that lets me know the neem oil will work, lol, and I thank you. And yes, it's war, and I'm taking it personal. lol, I like to just go sit in the room with my girls and watch the ladybugs go.

Well, I promised I'd try to take some pics and I did.

Sorry to ask dumdb questions, how many lady bugs did you put in there? VV

lol, honestly, I don't know an exact count. But the container supposedly came with 300, and I didn't release all of them yet, because this is war, and I plan to attack the spider mites in WAVES. Plus, it's only the 2 plants I'm releasing them on, I don't want to release more ladybugs than there is food...

If I had to guess, I'd say I released somewhere between 40 and 50 ladybugs. Why, do you think I should just release them all? All I know is they better start earning their keep. Some of them just like to kick it around the grow room....

i hVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND I REALLY NEED TO GET SOME LADY BUGS. WHERE DID U GET YOURS..(sory for caps just noticed they were on)

LadyBugs were always my plan if that had ever happened to me.
The cool thing about them is they eat spider mites in all stages of they're life.
Don't nessescarily diss the ones hanging around the grow room, the spider mites will straggle around too

why not buy mantids?

all is fair: this is war-no?
What is a mantid?

That should do it, they will stay busy for a couple of weeks any way, takes that long for the eggs to hatch. VV:roll:

Although...I suppose at this point any mantis would make a meal out of your lady beetles too. :-|

Its like a science project going on in there. Good luck with those bastard mites.

okay...so the lady bugs dont get sucked out from the exhaust?

what about when there is no more food? no more bugs? will they eat on the plants?

why not just keep them in the grow room???

I got my ladybugs at Osh. I know Home Depot carries them too, but when I called them they said they wouldn't have any until July. I also saw some on ebay. This site is pretty cool too Welcome to Tip Top Bio-Control but it costs an arm and a leg for shipping.

I thought about them, BUT, I've never seen them sold in a local store, and like I said, the shipping at that website (where they sell mantids, predatory mites, etc) costs way too much.

PLUS, mantids kinda freak me out. I saw this corny as movie once where there was this family of people who were really giant preying mantis...it wierded me out even more. For example, today I was watching my ladybugs, and one flew up and landed on my cheek. No need to feak out, it's just a lady bug, but if a mantis was on me ANYWHERE, I'd freak out pretty big.

Good point, didn't even think about.

I have a question for anyone who has had spider mites before: How does the plant act when it's recovering? Like, will the leaves stop looking so discolored and curved, or is it only new growth that will look better? PLUS, my plants growth has slowed to a stop...will it go back to growing or is it permanently stunted?

Mantises are wild. A big mantis will grub on a fucking bird!

I think when I get my grow underway Im going to bring in a mantis and just feed it ants or flies or crickets to keep it happy.

Then cross pests off of my 'potential problems' list. And How!

I had them bad like a year back then I moved but when I was there I had to trick them...They are smart..... Get some clear tape(like that weak ass tape you use for wrapping) and make a loop around the stock of your plant sticky side up...You know what im saying? Make sure no leaves are touching anything walls/floors/assholes/fingers/sneezes/soil...Your forcing them to crawl on the tape and get stuck replace it every couple days and spray your leaves down.

But remember I moved...LOL
